Generation Drobo
Q. Why does the Drobo 2nd Gen have two FireWire ports? Can I
connect it to two computers at the same time via FireWire?
A. No. You cannot connect the Drobo to two computers at the
same time. The two FireWire ports are for daisy chaining devices
only. If you are connecting your Drobo to your Windows/Mac/Linux
computer using FireWire, the second connection can be used, for
example, to daisy chain another Drobo.
Q. Can I use both USB & Firewire interfaces on my 2
nd
Generation
Drobo at the same time?
A. No. You can only use one Drobo interface connection to your
computer at a time. If you plug both USB 2.0 and FireWire 800 cables
from the Drobo to your computer, Drobo will select USB 2.0 by
default, we recommend you never configure your system in this
manner.
If you do need to change to an alternate interface, safely shut down
your Drobo System by putting it into Standby first, then turning off
power. Change the interface cables on the Drobo system, then
power the Drobo system back up. If you are sharing your Drobo with
multiple computers, you do not have to use the same interface on
both computers, but you must power down the unit before switching
interfaces.
Q. How can I shut down 1
st
or 2
nd
Generation Drobo safely for a
prolonged period?
A. Click the “Standby” command from the Advanced Controls > Tools
tab of Drobo Dashboard. The power light will turn yellow once the
Drobo has safely entered standby mode. You can now safely
disconnect power and store Drobo for a prolonged period.
If you do not have access to Drobo Dashboard for any reason, then:
1. Turn off your computer and wait for power light to change
from green to yellow.
2. Disconnect the USB or FireWire 800 cable and wait for power
light to change from green to yellow.
3. Remove power.
