Overview

This document provides assembly instructions and product information for the EarthMark™ Metal Garden Beds, specifically the MGB-H042 High Rectangle Bed.

Function Description:

The EarthMark™ Metal Garden Beds are designed to provide an ergonomic and efficient solution for gardening. They allow for the creation of raised garden beds, which can eliminate the need for annual tilling of soil and prevent soil compaction. These beds offer versatile planting options for various types of plants, from individual rows of larger plants to multiple rows of smaller plants, and can be configured to suit different garden layouts. The galvanized metal construction ensures durability and resistance to environmental exposure.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Model: MGB-H042 High Rectangle Bed
  • Assembled Dimensions: 40"L x 22"W x 17"H (102 x 56 x 45 cm)
  • Soil Volume: Approximately 8 cubic ft. (.23 m³)
  • Hardware: M8X12 bolts and nuts (24X provided)
  • Tools Required (not included): Wrench or socket (9/16" or 14mm), pliers, safety gloves.
  • Material: Galvanized metal. The hot-dipped galvanized finish is a durable, self-sacrificing finish that protects the steel from corrosion.
  • Extension Capability: Beds can be bolted end-to-end to form larger assemblies. They can also be extended in 36" intervals using EarthMark Garden Bed Extension Sets. A maximum of two extension sets can be joined to form a 9'-3" long bed. For longer runs, a new bed with end walls butted against the first is recommended to ensure structural integrity.

Usage Features:

  • Ergonomic Access: The raised design provides easier access to plants, reducing the need to bend or stoop excessively.
  • Soil Management: Prevents soil compaction, eliminating the need to till the soil each year.
  • Versatile Planting:
    • Narrow 22" beds: Ideal for larger plants like tomatoes, peppers, blueberries, or raspberries planted in a row. Smaller plants such as herbs or flowers can be grown as accents. These beds can be accessed from one side and are suitable for placement against a wall or as a border.
    • 40" wide beds: Best for planning multiple rows of plants such as lettuce, radishes, carrots, corn, or rambling plants like strawberries. These beds require two-sided access.
  • Site Preparation: It is recommended to prepare a level ground and remove existing vegetation before installation. Weed cloth can be used under the beds, with a double layer recommended for beds placed on un-stripped lawn.
  • Drainage: A layer of gravel or stone can be used at the bottom of the beds for improved drainage. For rooftop installations, a heavy-duty poly or rubber sheet can be used as a liner, with drain holes cut around the bottom edges to ensure proper drainage.
  • Assembly: The assembly process involves loosely hand-tightening all nuts and bolt sets first, positioning the bed, and then fully tightening all fasteners with a wrench or socket. Safety gloves are recommended during assembly due to potentially sharp metal edges.
  • Safety Warning: These raised garden beds are not toys and children should not play in or around them. Using the beds for applications other than gardening will void the warranty.

Maintenance Features:

  • Low Maintenance: Galvanized metal beds require no maintenance.
  • Corrosion Resistance: The hot-dipped galvanized finish protects the steel from corrosion.
  • Appearance: Galvanize will fade with time, and some discoloration is normal. Minor surface rust on edges and hardware is to be expected but will not affect the structural integrity of the product.
  • Cleaning: Do not use adhesive removers, as they often contain citric acid which can damage the galvanized finish.
  • Structural Integrity: Avoid standing on or leaning a wheelbarrow against the bed wall, as this can damage the wall and void the warranty.
