  If the shield and drive gear on your EDLUND Can Opener won't lock in place, the shield latch may not be functioning correctly. Remove the knifeholder, gear, and shield. Ensure the latch, located through the hole in the front of the housing, moves up and down easily and that the spring is holding the latch down. If there are issues with movement or the spring, disassemble and remove the motor and gearbox assembly from the housing and repair the latch as needed.
