User Calibration
In case of severe overload the scale may loses its accuracy. Re-
calibration of the scale may be needed. The load cell of this precision
scale is normally protected against overloaded weight applied slowly, but
extreme overload caused by dropping the scale or dropping something
heavy on the scale may require re-calibration.
CAUTION: Please do not attempt any calibration by yourself unless you
have a 5lb weight available.
Make sure the scale is connected to the PC via USB cable or to AC
mains. Press the ON/TARE key and hold it for about 5 seconds. When
the display changes to , release the ON/TARE key. Now the
scale is in user calibration mode (the LCD also displays 5lb on the left
corner). Put 5lb weight on the platform. After the weight is stable, scale
will calibrate itself. Once the calibration is completed, scale will enter the
normal weighing mode.

Overview

The ELANE USB10 is a high-quality precision electronic digital scale designed for weighing and outputting weight data to a computer via USB. It functions as a postal scale, capable of handling various items, including large flats or mailing tubes, thanks to its fold-up platform.

Function Description

The primary function of the USB10 is to accurately measure weight and transmit this data to a connected PC. It supports both imperial (pounds/ounces) and metric (kilograms/grams) units, with an easy switching mechanism. The scale also features a tare function, allowing users to zero out the weight of a container to measure only the net weight of its contents. Its design emphasizes ease of use and integration with computer applications for efficient data handling.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Weight Range: 0 to 10lb (0 to 5kg)
  • Resolution: 0.1oz (1g)
  • Accuracy: ± 0.1% of reading ± 1 digit
  • Minimum Weight: 0.1oz (1g)
  • Min. Add-on Weight: 0.1oz (1g)
  • Power Options:
    • AC Adapter: 9V, 100mA (Optional)
    • USB: Self-powered (when connected to a computer)
    • Battery: 9V alkaline battery (Not supplied)
  • Display: 7-segment 6 digit LCD
  • Load Cell Technology: Four optimally placed single precision strain gauges with temperature compensation.
  • Load Cell Body: High Tensile Strength Aluminum Alloy
  • Case & Platform Material: ABS plastic
  • Overload Protection: Mechanical overload protection, unlimited to the total capacity of the scale.
  • Warm-up Time: 1 minute or less
  • Operating Temperature: Good performance within 50 to 105 degrees F
  • Auto Off: After 5 minutes of non-use in battery operation to conserve power.

Usage Features

  • Three-Way Power: The scale can be powered by an AC adapter, directly via USB from a computer, or by a 9V alkaline battery, offering flexibility for different environments. When using the AC adapter, it's advisable to remove the battery.
  • Fold-Up Platform: A convenient fold-up platform is integrated into the design, making it suitable for weighing irregularly shaped items like round objects, large flats, or mailing tubes.
  • Unit Switching: The scale is initially set to display weight in grams. Users can easily switch between grams (g) and pounds/ounces (oz) by pressing and holding the ON/TARE key for approximately 5 seconds when 0.0oz is displayed.
  • Tare Function: This feature allows users to set the scale to zero after placing a container on the platform. This ensures that only the weight of the contents is measured, indicated by "T" on the left side of the LCD.
  • USB Connectivity: The USB10 connects to a PC via a supplied USB cable. Windows/Mac operating systems automatically recognize the scale as a USB HID device, installing the appropriate drivers. This connection enables the scale to output weight data to computer applications. Elane provides software for displaying weight and a DLL for customized applications.
  • Scale Startup: Upon startup, the scale performs a self-check/zeroing routine, briefly displaying "888888 oz" before settling on "0.0oz" or "0g," indicating it is ready for weighing. When powered by an adapter or USB, it can be left on for optimal performance.

Maintenance Features

  • Overload Protection: The scale is designed with mechanical overload protection to safeguard the load cell from damage due to excessive weight applied slowly. However, extreme overload from dropping the scale or heavy objects may still necessitate recalibration.
  • User Calibration: In cases of severe overload or loss of accuracy, user calibration may be required. This process involves connecting the scale to a PC or AC mains, pressing and holding the ON/TARE key for about 5 seconds until the display changes, then releasing it. The scale enters calibration mode (displaying "5lb" in the left corner), and a 5lb weight is placed on the platform. The scale calibrates itself once the weight is stable and then returns to normal weighing mode. It is cautioned that users should only attempt calibration if a 5lb weight is available.
  • Low Battery Indicator: The scale includes a low battery indicator. While operation is possible with a low battery, accuracy may be affected, so prompt replacement of the 9V alkaline battery is recommended.
  • Error Messages: The display can show error messages such as "O-Ld" for overload, indicating that the scale's capacity has been exceeded. If the scale displays numbers after startup and cannot enter normal weighing mode, it suggests a potential overload requiring recalibration.
