Overview

This document provides comprehensive instructions for the installation, operation, and maintenance of a chest freezer. It is designed to ensure safe and efficient use of the appliance.

Function Description

The chest freezer is primarily designed for the domestic storage of edible foodstuffs, specifically for freezing and keeping food frozen. It is not intended for commercial or industrial use. The appliance features a main compartment for frozen food storage, a dedicated compartment for freezing fresh foods, and a defrost water drain. It operates by maintaining a low internal temperature to preserve food over extended periods. The freezer is equipped with a thermostat control knob to adjust the temperature and an amber indicator light that illuminates when the internal temperature is suitable for safe frozen food storage.

Usage Features

Before Use: Before first use, all packaging and securing tapes should be removed. The interior of the appliance should be washed with lukewarm water and bicarbonate of soda (5ml to 0.5 litre of water), avoiding soap or detergent to prevent lingering smells. The interior must be thoroughly dried.

Starting the Appliance: To start the freezer, insert the plug into a wall socket. The amber indicator light will illuminate once the appliance reaches the correct storage temperature for frozen food. If the light goes out, it may indicate a power failure, the lid being recently opened, a large quantity of food added, or a fault.

Temperature Control: The freezer's temperature is controlled by a thermostat located on the lower front of the cabinet. For initial use, it is recommended to set the thermostat to a medium setting. The correct setting can be verified by measuring the temperature of the top middle package in the freezer, which should not be warmer than -18°C. The "Min" setting provides the lowest temperature (minimum cold), while "Fast Freeze" provides the highest setting (maximum cold). After starting, allow the freezer to run for several hours before placing food inside. Do not fill the freezer to more than 5mm below the top edge.

Opening/Closing the Lid: The lid is fitted with a tight sealing strip to prevent moisture ingress and frost formation. After opening, a vacuum may form, making it difficult to reopen immediately. This is normal; wait a few minutes for the pressure to equalize before gently opening the lid. Never use excessive force on the handle.

Freezing Fresh Food: To freeze fresh food effectively, it should be frozen quickly to minimize impact on already frozen items. If freezing more than 3-4kg of food, turn the thermostat control knob to the "Fast freeze" setting 6-24 hours before placing new food in the freezer. Leave it on "Fast freeze" for an additional 24 hours after adding food, then return the thermostat to the normal storage temperature. Forgetting to return the knob will not damage the freezer but will waste energy.

Frozen Food Storage: When first starting the freezer or after a period of disuse, run the appliance for at least 2 hours before storing frozen food. Adhere to the manufacturer's recommended storage periods. Avoid frequent or prolonged opening of the lid. Do not store carbonated liquids, as they can burst. Consuming ice lollies directly from the freezer can cause 'frost/freezer burns'. Avoid touching frozen items with damp or wet hands to prevent skin abrasions or frost/freezer burns. Bottles and cans should not be placed in the freezer compartment as their contents can freeze and burst.

Thawing: Frozen food can be thawed in the fridge or at room temperature. Small items can be cooked from frozen, though cooking time will be longer. Accidentally thawed food should be consumed as soon as possible or discarded. If uncooked and not fully defrosted, it can be cooked and then refrozen. Defrosted cooked food must never be refrozen.

Lock (Optional): Some models include a lock for security. Always keep the key out of reach of children.

Baskets: The freezer includes baskets for storing already frozen food. Their handles can be positioned in two ways, allowing them to be placed inside the freezer or hung on the edge of the casing. Additional baskets can be obtained from Expert Appliance Care.

Hints and Tips:

  • Normal Operating Sounds: Expect gurgling, bubbling, whirring, or pulsating noises from the refrigerant and occasional clicks from the thermostat.
  • Food Storage: Do not store warm food or evaporating liquids. Avoid buying frozen food if it cannot be stored immediately; use an insulated container for transport. Arrange food to allow air circulation. Label and date food, using it in date order. Lean food keeps longer than fatty food; salt reduces storage time. Wrap food in airtight polythene or aluminium bags/foil. Discard swollen or refrozen packages. Never exceed manufacturer storage times.
  • Energy Saving Advice: Install the appliance away from heat sources and in a cool, well-ventilated room with unobstructed air openings. Pack foodstuffs in airtight packages to prevent frosting. Cool food in the fridge before transferring to the freezer. Avoid prolonged or frequent lid openings to prevent warm air entry and unnecessary compressor operation. Ensure the lid closes properly.
  • In the Event of a Power Failure: Keep the lid closed. If the temperature rises, do not refreeze food without checking its condition. Ice cream should be discarded. Soft fruits and vegetables should be cooked and used. Breads and cakes can be refrozen. Shellfish should be refrigerated and used quickly. Cooked dishes should be refrigerated and used quickly. Large pieces of meat can be refrozen if ice crystals remain. Small joints and chicken should be cooked and then refrozen as cooked/fresh dishes.
  • The freezer's exterior may occasionally feel warm due to the freezing process, which is normal and helps prevent moisture formation and rust.

Maintenance Features

Defrosting: The freezer compartment will accumulate frost. Remove frost exceeding 1/4" thickness with the provided plastic scraper without switching off the appliance or removing foodstuffs. Complete defrosting is necessary when ice becomes very thick, ideally when the appliance is empty. To defrost:

  1. Disconnect from the electrical supply.
  2. Remove stored food, wrap in newspaper, and store in a cool place.
  3. Leave the lid open.
  4. Remove the plug from the defrost water drain.
  5. To accelerate, place a bowl of hot (not boiling) water inside and close the lid.
  6. Collect defrost water in a bowl.
  7. Once defrosted, dry the interior thoroughly and replace the defrost water drain plug.
  8. Reconnect to electricity and run for at least 2 hours on a medium setting.
  9. Replace the food. Important: A temperature rise during defrosting can shorten food storage life. Never use sharp metal tools to scrape frost, as this can damage the appliance.

Cleaning:

  • Internal Cleaning: Disconnect from the electrical supply before cleaning. Clean the inside and accessories with warm water and bicarbonate of soda (5ml to 0.5 litre of water). Rinse and dry thoroughly. Never use detergents, abrasive powders, highly perfumed cleaning products, or wax polishes, as they will damage the surface and leave a strong odour.
  • External Cleaning: Wash the outer cabinet with warm soapy water.

When the Appliance is not in Use: For long periods of disuse, disconnect from the electrical supply, empty all food, clean the appliance, and leave the lid open to prevent unpleasant smells.

To Change the Light Bulb (Optional):

  1. Disconnect from the electrical supply.
  2. Unscrew the bulb.
  3. Replace with a new bulb (max. 15W).
  4. Reconnect to the electrical supply. Spare bulbs are available from Expert Appliance Care.

Servicing: This product should only be serviced by an authorised engineer using genuine spare parts. Do not attempt repairs yourself, as this can cause injury or serious malfunctioning. Contact Expert Appliance Care for any issues.

End of Appliance Life: When disposing of the appliance, use an authorised disposal site. Remove the plug and any locks or catches to prevent children from being trapped inside.
