Overview

The Elite Gourmet 8.5QT. Programmable Slow Cooker with Locking Lid (Model: MST-900VXD) is a versatile kitchen appliance designed for convenient and efficient slow cooking. This device allows users to prepare a variety of meals with minimal effort, making it ideal for busy individuals or those who enjoy hands-off cooking. The slow cooker operates at temperatures just around boiling, offering both LOW and HIGH settings to accommodate different cooking needs and timeframes.

Function Description:

The primary function of this appliance is to slow cook food, which involves cooking at lower temperatures over an extended period. This method is excellent for tenderizing less expensive cuts of meat and for developing rich flavors in various dishes. The programmable nature of the slow cooker allows users to set specific cooking times, after which the unit will automatically switch off, preventing overcooking and ensuring food safety. It also features a "WARM" function, which can keep food at a serving temperature for an extended period after cooking is complete. The locking lid system enhances portability, making it convenient for transporting cooked meals to potlucks, parties, or other events without spills.

Usage Features:

To begin using the slow cooker, users must first remove all labels and tags, then wash the ceramic pot and glass lid. A preliminary operation with water is recommended to ensure proper function and to eliminate any manufacturing odors. The unit plugs into a standard 120V AC outlet and is activated by a power button. The screen illuminates, and numbers blink, indicating it's ready for programming.

Users can select from LOW, HIGH, or WARM cooking modes using the MODE selector button. Cooking times can be adjusted in 30-minute increments using the '+' or '-' buttons. If no specific cook time is entered for LOW or HIGH modes, the slow cooker defaults to 8 hours for LOW and 4 hours for HIGH. Once the cooking time is set, the unit begins to heat, and the display counts down the remaining time. Upon completion, the slow cooker automatically switches off.

When handling the slow cooker during or after operation, it is crucial to use oven mitts or potholders, as the base unit and stoneware pot become very hot. The glass lid should be removed carefully by grasping the lid knob and lifting it slightly to allow steam to escape before fully removing it. The base unit features handles for safe transport, and the locking lid system ensures the lid remains securely in place during movement.

The slow cooker is designed for use with its ceramic pot; direct cooking in the base unit is not recommended. When adapting traditional recipes, it's advised to halve the liquid content, as very little moisture boils away during slow cooking. If a recipe results in too much liquid, the lid can be removed, and the slow cooker can be operated on the HIGH setting for 30-45 minutes to reduce the liquid. Root vegetables should be cut into small, even pieces and placed at the bottom of the pot, immersed in liquid, as they take longer to cook than meat. Browning meats in a separate skillet before adding them to the slow cooker can enhance flavor and color. Whole herbs and spices are preferred over crushed or ground ones for better flavor in slow cooking.

The "WARM" function is particularly useful for keeping food ready to serve for up to 20 hours, although prolonged warming beyond 4 hours may affect food texture and flavor. Food cooked in other appliances can also be transferred to the slow cooker for warming.

Maintenance Features:

Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and safe operation of the Elite Gourmet Slow Cooker. The ceramic insert and glass lid are dishwasher safe, but they can also be cleaned with warm, soapy water. For stubborn food residue, soaking the ceramic pot overnight in soapy water is effective. It is important to allow the glass lid and ceramic pot to cool completely before washing or placing them in a cold environment to prevent cracking due to sudden temperature changes.

The exterior of the slow cooker's base unit should be wiped with a damp cloth and dried. Abrasive cleaners or scouring pads should not be used on any part of the slow cooker, as they can damage the surfaces. The base unit, which houses the heating elements, must never be submerged in water or any other liquid to avoid electrical shock and damage to the appliance.

Users should avoid hitting the stoneware pot and glass lid against hard surfaces, such as faucets, to prevent chipping, cracking, or scratching. Any stoneware pot or lid that is chipped, cracked, or broken should not be used. The slow cooker is not intended for reheating food stored in the refrigerator; sudden temperature changes from cold to hot can damage the ceramic pot.

For storage, all parts should be clean and dry. The appliance should be stored in its original box or in a clean, dry place. The stoneware pot should be placed inside the base unit, and the glass lid placed over it. To protect the glass lid, it can be wrapped in a soft cloth and placed upside down over the stoneware pot. The power cord should be loosely coiled, never wrapped tightly around the appliance. The slow cooker should always be unplugged and powered off before cleaning or storing. This appliance contains no user-serviceable parts, and any repairs beyond basic cleaning should be performed by a qualified technician.
