This document describes the installation, operation, and maintenance of Encon Safety Products' Emergency Combination Shower and Eye/Facewash Stations. These units are designed for floor mounting in areas where individuals may come into contact with hazardous materials, providing immediate flushing fluid in emergencies.

Function Description

The Emergency Combination Shower and Eye/Facewash Stations are safety devices designed to provide a continuous flow of water to flush hazardous materials from the eyes, face, and body. They combine an overhead shower for full-body decontamination and an eye/facewash unit for targeted eye and face flushing. Some models include optional features such as freeze-resistant showers, drench hoses, and scald protection valves to enhance functionality and safety in various environments. The units are activated by a pull rod for the shower and a push plate for the eye/facewash, designed to remain open without requiring continuous operator action.

Important Technical Specifications

The stations are constructed from standard galvanized steel and stainless steel, ensuring durability and resistance to corrosive environments. Dimensions (refer to Figure 1 for specific models):

- Model 1 (leftmost): 95 3/4" (243.20cm) REF. TO STANDING LEVEL (69" (175.26cm) TO STANDING LEVEL for shower head)

Water Inlet: 1 1/4" (3.17cm) NPT Optional Inlet (can be at upper tee or mid-point plugged adapter).
Waste Outlet: 1 1/4" (3.17cm) NPT Waste.
Eye/Facewash Nozzle Height: Between 33" (83.8 cm) and 45" (114.3 cm) from the floor, and a minimum of 6" (15.3 cm) from the wall or nearest obstruction.
Shower Head Height: Not less than 82" (208.3 cm) nor more than 96" (243.8 cm) from the standing surface.
Minimum Dynamic Water Pressure: 30 psi (0.207 megapascal).
Recommended Maximum Dynamic Water Pressure: 80 psi.
Shower Spray Pattern: Minimum 20" (50.8 cm) diameter at 60" (152.4 cm) above the standing surface. The center of the spray must be at least 16" (40.6 cm) from any obstructions.
Mounting: Floor flange with four (4) attachment points. Hardware (expansion anchors for concrete, machine bolts/nuts for metal, lag screws for wood) is not included.

Usage Features

Activation: The shower is activated by a pull rod, and the eye/facewash by a push plate. Both mechanisms are designed to keep the water flowing once activated, allowing the user to use both hands for flushing.
Simultaneous Operation: All devices on combination units are capable of operating simultaneously to meet ANSI standards, ensuring comprehensive emergency response.
Accessibility: Units must be installed in accessible locations, requiring no more than 10 seconds travel time from the farthest hazard.
Visibility: Each unit location must be identified with a highly visible sign and the area around the unit must be well lit.
Optional Features:
- Freeze Protection Valve: Prevents freezing in cold environments.
- Scald Protection Valve: Protects users from excessively hot water.
- Drench Hose: Provides a flexible option for targeted flushing of body parts or equipment.
- Treadle Kits: Optional foot-operated activation for eye/facewash on some models.

Maintenance Features

Weekly Activation: Plumbed units must be activated weekly to flush lines and verify proper flow patterns and volumes. This prevents sediment buildup and ensures the unit is operational.
Annual Inspection: Units should be inspected annually for proper operation to ensure compliance with ANSI Z358.1 standard.
Protection Valve Inspection: If freeze or scald protection valves are included, they should be inspected and cycled annually before hot or cold weather sets in.
Test Records: Maintain records of all tests to verify compliance with testing procedures.
Flushing Prior to Installation: The piping system should be thoroughly flushed before installing freeze or scald protection valves to prevent particles from obstructing valve operation.
Sealant Use: Pipe sealant is required for proper attachment of components, except where noted (e.g., shower head and eye/facewash head assembly connections where hand tightening is sufficient).
Troubleshooting: The manual provides detailed assembly instructions that double as a guide for understanding the unit's construction, which can aid in troubleshooting.
Warranty: Encon Safety Products offers a one-year warranty against defects in materials and workmanship, provided the product is properly used, cared for, cleaned, and installed according to instructions. Replacement parts also carry a one-year warranty.
