Do you have a question about the Enercraft Ultra-Starter UST-2030 and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The Ultra-Starter 28V, available in models UST-2030 and UST-4030, is a portable ground power unit designed by ENERCRAFT to facilitate aircraft engine starts for both airplanes and helicopters. It provides a clean and efficient 30 ± 0.5 Volt DC electrical ground power, aiming to extend the lifespan of aircraft engines. The device is engineered to operate reliably across a wide range of weather and environmental conditions, making it a versatile tool for aviation operations.

Function Description

The primary function of the Ultra-Starter 28V is to deliver high-current electrical power for starting aircraft engines. It achieves this by combining the latest advancements in energy storage technology, specifically integrating Lithium batteries with Ultracapacitors. This unique configuration ensures a robust and stable power output, even under demanding conditions. Beyond engine starting, the Ultra-Starter can also function as a Ground Power Unit (GPU), providing continuous power for aircraft avionics, electronic equipment, or for recharging aircraft batteries. This dual functionality makes it a comprehensive solution for various ground support needs. The device is designed to ensure peak current delivery, even when its internal charge conditions are not ideal, which is a critical feature for reliable engine starts. By providing a dedicated and clean power source, it helps preserve the aircraft's main battery, extending its useful life and reducing wear and tear.

Usage Features

The Ultra-Starter 28V is designed with user convenience and operational efficiency in mind. It incorporates a full data display that provides real-time information on the unit's voltage and battery load percentage, allowing users to monitor its status at a glance. Additionally, a USB connector is integrated for added utility. The device is housed in a protective case, which is reliably waterproof, ensuring durability and protection against environmental elements. This case features NANUK®'s patented latching system, enhancing security and ease of access. The overall design is robust and impact-resistant, built to withstand the rigors of aviation environments. Despite its powerful capabilities, the Ultra-Starter is lightweight and boasts a modern design, making it a highly portable piece of equipment.

For ease of transport and operation, the UST-4030 model includes a two-stage retractable handle and polyurethane wheels with stainless steel bearings, enabling one-handed operation and effortless movement across the tarmac or hangar floor. The UST-2030, while more compact, also prioritizes portability. The units are designed as all-in-one solutions, combining the starter and GPU functionalities into a single, integrated device.

Operating the Ultra-Starter involves a straightforward procedure. Before initial use, it is crucial to check the unit's battery status, as it may not be fully charged upon receipt due to shipping regulations for Lithium batteries. A first full charge of at least three hours is recommended to stabilize the batteries and ensure optimal performance, aiming for a voltage above 30V. During normal operations, the discharge voltage remains relatively constant for an extended period, a characteristic of the Lithium cells that enhances energy delivery efficiency. The display provides visual cues as the battery level decreases, with green LEDs fading out sequentially. Users are strongly advised to recharge the unit when the voltage reaches 26.2V to prevent critical voltage levels and potential compromise of battery life.

The engine starting procedure is simple: unplug the AC cord if connected, plug the DC connector into the aircraft, and turn the DC power switch to the ON position. For battery charging, the DC power switch should be turned OFF, the AC cord plugged into a grounded outlet, and the charger (AC power switch) turned ON. The unit charges relatively quickly, with the UST-2030 reaching full charge in 45 minutes and the UST-4030 in 90 minutes from a fully discharged state.

The Ultra-Starter can also be used as a GPU in two ways. When "plugged in," it draws power from its internal Switching Power Supply, delivering up to 10 Amps continuously without a time limit. This mode requires the AC cord to be plugged into a grounded outlet, the DC connector to the aircraft, and both the charger and DC power switches to be ON. For situations where external power is unavailable, such as in remote locations, the unit can be used "not plugged in," drawing power directly from its high-quality prismatic Lithium batteries. In this mode, it can deliver higher currents for shorter periods, suitable for powering avionics, other electronic equipment, or recharging aircraft batteries. This flexibility makes it an invaluable tool for various operational scenarios.

Maintenance Features

The Ultra-Starter 28V units are designed to be limited maintenance-free and sealed. This means that no user repairs are authorized, and any attempts to open or tamper with the units will void the warranty. This design philosophy emphasizes safety and ensures the integrity of the internal components, particularly the LiFePO4 cell batteries, which are prepared for high currents and include ventilation systems.

Users are advised to protect the units from short circuits at all times. Regular visual checks of the cables are recommended to detect any possible cuts or damages, ensuring safe and reliable operation. During the charging process, it is normal to perceive an electrolyte smell, which is a result of the ventilation system for the prismatic LiFePO4 cells. Charging should always be done in a well-ventilated area.

For storage, it is important to note that the Ultra-Starter units should not be stored for extended periods without use. To maintain battery health and prevent full discharge, it is highly recommended to check the batteries frequently and charge the units every 15-30 days if they are not in operation. Neglecting this can lead to compromised battery life, loss of Lithium cell properties, and potentially require a full repair service and cell replacement if left unattended and discharged for over 30 days. The unit's configuration and Lithium batteries are designed to minimize strong discharges during short-term storage, but regular checks are still essential for long-term preservation.
