Planning
a menu
When you’re in the outback there may not
be a shop to go to if you’ve forgotten
something and because space is limited
you don’t want to carry excessive food
that robs valuable storage space.
Write up a weekly menu for the length of
your trip. It’s great fun to do and you’ll be
surprised at the variety of meals you can
achieve. Always plan an extra few days
supplies in case of an emergency.
COOKING OPTIONS
The range of cooking gear available
today is quite sensational; you have the
traditional campfire cooking gear, gas
and fuel stoves as well as butane style
portable units.
Fire wood is not always available, or if
there is, a fire ban is usually in place;
therefore it is recommended to have a
quality 2 or 3 burner stove either gas or
fuel as a back up to the open fire. Many
of these stoves have an optional griddle
so you can always have a barbecue. It is
also great to have a portable butane
stove to be able to boil the billy for a
cuppa or be able to prepare a quick meal
if you’re on the go. These units are not
recommended for long stays or for
cooking a big meal as the gas refills
become quite expensive.
KITCHEN CHECKLIST
If you’re travelling regularly its best to
have your kitchen utensils stored in their
own sealed container making it easier to
get up and go. Essential items for
outback travel as well as standard knives
and forks includes multi grips for picking
up pots and pans off the fire and gloves
or a mit strainer for cooking pasta and
rice as well as doubling as an aerator for
sifting flour for damper. Plenty of long
and short handle clippers, a filleting
knife, extra large breadboard for making
sandwiches, lots of sharp knives etc.
Melamine style plates and cups look
good and are easy to clean, stack and
won’t break.
FREEZER TIPS
To double your capacity for portable
refrigeration use your Engel as a freezer
to freeze ice bricks and then transfer to
your ENGEL ice box.
To maximise freezing performance, pack
meat into meal size containers and store,
ensuring adequate airflow around each
container.
DAY PACK
In the morning the food you will use that
day always needs to be close by so
instead of having to search into the
bottom of the car and making a mess an
ideal solution is a daypack. By having a
back pack in the front of the car you
always have easy access to your food
and drinks.
