Recognized
and available for 3A, 10A and 20A loads and
suitable for 110-120V ac/dc and 220-240Vac
circuits.
The TDF is a series connected, single phase
surge fi lter providing an aggregate surge
capacity of 50kA (8/20μs) across L-N, L-PE,
and N-PE. The low pass fi lter provides up to
65dB of attenuation to voltage transients.
Not only does this reduce the residual
let-through voltage, but it also helps
further reduce the steep voltage rate-of-rise
providing superior protection for sensitive
electronic equipment.

Overview

The ERICO CRITEC® Transient Discriminating Filter (TDF) is a series-connected, single-phase surge filter designed for process control applications. It specifically protects switched-mode power supply units in devices such as PLC controllers, SCADA systems, and motor controllers. The TDF series is available for 3A, 10A, and 20A loads and is suitable for 110-120V AC/DC and 220-240V AC circuits.

Function Description:

The TDF utilizes CRITEC® Transient Discriminating (TD) Technology, which enhances service life. It provides in-line series protection and features high-efficiency low-pass sine wave filtering, making it ideal for protecting switched-mode power supplies. The filter offers three modes of protection: Line-to-Neutral (L-N), Line-to-Protective Earth (L-PE), and Neutral-to-Protective Earth (N-PE). It provides an aggregate surge capacity of 50kA (8/20µs) across L-N, L-PE, and N-PE. The low-pass filter delivers up to 65dB of attenuation to voltage transients, reducing residual let-through voltage and the steep voltage rate-of-rise for superior protection of sensitive electronic equipment.

Usage Features:

  • DIN Rail Mount: Designed for simple installation onto 35 mm DIN rails (standard EN50022).
  • Status Indication: Features a green LED on the front panel. When power is applied and full surge capacity is available, the LED illuminates. If the LED fails to illuminate, the TDF should be replaced.
  • Remote Status Monitoring: Includes an isolated opto-coupler output for remote status monitoring. This output can be connected to a DINLINE Alarm Relay (DAR275V) to provide Form C dry contacts.
  • Wiring: Terminals accept wire sizes from 10 to 18 AWG (1.5mm² to 6mm²) solid or stranded conductor. Wire insulation should be stripped back 5/16" (8mm).
  • Overcurrent Protection: Upstream overcurrent protection (breaker or fuse) is required for every TDF to protect the unit, load, and wiring. Max fuse sizes are 4A for 3A TDF, 10A for 10A TDF, and 20A for 20A TDF.
  • Wiring Separation: For optimal effectiveness, unprotected wiring (from the exposed transient source to the TDF) should be separated from protected wiring (on the equipment side of the TDF) by approximately 12" (300mm) to minimize cross-coupling.
  • Reverse Connection: For applications where the transient source is on the load side, the TDF can be reverse connected with the INPUT/LINE terminals connected to the load side.

Maintenance Features:

  • Inspection: TDF units should be inspected periodically, and after any periods of lightning or transient voltage activity.
  • Replacement: If the Status Indicator LED fails to illuminate, the TDF module should be replaced by qualified personnel.
  • Safety: Ensure power is removed from the area and circuits before installation or maintenance. Do not perform a "Flash Test" or use a Mega-Ohm Meter (Megger) on protected circuits, as this may damage the TDF modules.
  • Warranty: Do not open or tamper with the TDF units, as this may compromise performance and void the warranty.
