This document is a user guide and installation handbook for an Essentials ESSCH60TC electric ceramic hob. It provides comprehensive information on safety, product usage, cleaning, installation, and customer care.
The Essentials ESSCH60TC is an electric ceramic hob designed for cooking purposes. It features multiple cooking zones and touch controls for precise power adjustment. The hob is intended for built-in installation in a worktop and is equipped with safety features such as residual heat indicators and an automatic shut-off mechanism.
The hob's touch controls are designed for fingertip operation, offering accurate and repeatable power settings. The controls respond to touch, requiring no pressure, and take approximately 1 second to respond. For optimal operation, the touch control area should be kept clean, dry, and free from any objects. A beeping sound will alert the user if objects are detected on the control area.
Before initial use, it is recommended to switch off any bright lights (like a cooker hood) and ensure the appliance is not in direct sunlight to allow the electronic controls to calibrate their sensitivity against ambient lighting. Failure to do so may result in the hob not functioning correctly, displaying "FL".
The hob features a Key Lock function, indicated by a red LED. This lock can be activated or deactivated by touching the Key Lock key for 1 second. When active, the key lock prevents unintentional switching on of the appliance, which is particularly useful for households with small children or pets. If cook zones are ON, the key lock locks all keys except the ON/OFF key. If cook zones are OFF, it locks all keys, including the ON/OFF key. The Key Lock is automatically activated every time the electricity supply is switched off and restored to the hob.
The Central On/Off key activates the cooking zone selection keys and allows all cooking zones to be switched off simultaneously with a single touch.
To switch on an individual cook zone, first ensure the Key lock is deactivated. Then, touch the On/Off Key for 1 second until a beep sounds and the cook zone display illuminates. Touch the desired cook zone key, which will then flash. While flashing, adjust the power level using the Up+/down- keys. The setting can be confirmed by touching the cook zone key again or by waiting 5-10 seconds for the hob to auto-set the power level, beep, and stop flashing. A quick operation allows setting the power level to 9 by touching the down (-) key from 0.
Some models may feature a Dual Zone, which allows separate control of the inner ring of the heating element. To operate the dual cook zone, select the appropriate cook zone and set its power level. While the heater display is flashing, press the central dual zone key; a red LED will illuminate, indicating activation. The power level will stop flashing and be set. To de-select the dual cook zone, touch the cook zone key until the display flashes, then press the central dual zone key or return the power level to "0". Only the inner ring can be operated independently; the outer ring operates only with the inner ring.
The hob also includes an Auto Heat Up feature. To use this, select a cook zone, increase to power level 9, then press the up (+) key again until a red LED illuminates. While the power level is flashing, select the desired power level. Once set, the red LED remains illuminated. After the heat-up time elapses, a beep will sound, the red LED disappears, and the heater remains at the reduced level.
A Timer function is available for all four cooking zones, allowing independent operation for up to 99 minutes. When the set time expires, the timer will beep, and the cook zone will switch off automatically. To set the timer, first set the desired power level for the cook zone. Then, while the power level is flashing, touch the timer key. The timer display will show "00," and two red LEDs will illuminate, with the first one flashing to indicate the activated timed cook zone and the second "00" for time adjustment. Adjust the time using the up(+) and down(-) keys. To cancel the timer, either return the time to zero or switch off the cook zone.
Residual Heat Indicators ("H") will be displayed in the cook zone display if the glass surface is hot until it has sufficiently cooled. "H" and "0" will flash alternatively if the cook zone is hot and another cook zone is in use.
The hob incorporates a Safety Shut Down feature, which automatically turns off a cook zone if the power level is not changed for a long period. The maximum time a cook zone can stay on depends on its power level.
For cookware, it is recommended to use pans with thick, flat bottoms. Cookware made of enamelled steel, aluminium, or copper bottoms may cause discolorations on the ceramic glass surface.
For ceramic glass hobs, it is recommended to clean and wash the surface before first use and apply a thin coat of ceramic hob cleaner to maintain and protect it. The hob top can be cleaned with a clean, damp cloth or kitchen paper. Avoid using used dishcloths or sponges, as they can leave a detergent film leading to discoloration. Ensure elements are fully cooled to prevent steam burns. A specialist ceramic cleaner can restore the surface, but use sparingly to avoid thick coating, which can cause discoloration. For stubborn marks, a specialist hob scraper or cleaner can be used. Steam cleaners or high-pressure cleaning equipment should not be used. Regular cleaning prevents salt or mineral accumulation and glass discoloration. Spills should be wiped immediately. Cleaning the hob top regularly prevents grease build-up, which can be a fire hazard.
For solid plate hobs, "Prime and Season" helps maintain the finish of the elements. Wipe solid plates with a damp, clean cloth, following circular grooves and avoiding red spots. Allow the hotplate to dry before use by switching on elements at a low heat. Solid plate cleaner can restore hotplates, but care should be taken to avoid red spots. To prime, switch on each element for a short while at a medium-high setting without a pan to harden and burn off the coating. To season, heat the element for 30 seconds at a medium setting, then switch off. Apply a minimum amount of unsalted vegetable oil with a dry cloth or paper towel, and then heat the element for one minute.
During cleaning, the appliance must be switched off and cooled down to avoid the risk of burns from residual heat. The edge of the ceramic glass may appear a different color due to the ground safety edge. Scratches or dark stains that cannot be removed do not affect the appliance's function.
The manual also provides a troubleshooting guide for common issues, such as no power to the hob, the hob turning itself off, or error codes appearing. For persistent problems, contacting customer service is advised. Incorrect operation or handling during the warranty period may result in chargeable engineer visits.
Energy-saving tips include always placing cookware on the cooking zone before switching it on, using lids on pans whenever possible, switching off cook zones before the end of cooking time to take advantage of residual heat, and ensuring the cookware bottom and cooking zones are the same size.
