SAFETY
Read and understand this installation and operating manual as well as the controls manual before operating your kiln. If you have any questions please
contact Evenheat Kiln at 989-856-2281 or at evenheat-kiln.com.
Kilns are as safe as any other electrical appliance when used under normal and proper operating conditions. To create and maintain this safe environment
observe all safety precautions.
Warning Symbol Descriptions
Warning symbols are used throughout this manual. These symbols alert the operator to certain hazards and important information. Pictured below
are symbols used along with a description of each.
The Exclamation Point alerts you to particular cautions, hazards and information.
The Lightning Bolt alerts you to specific information regarding the risk of electric shock.
Electric shock may result in injury or death.
The Heat Waves alert you to specific information regarding the risk of burn injury.
Emergency Shut Off Provision
The kilns power supply connection (plug/receptacle, breaker or disconnect) acts as the emergency electrical power shut off. Access to these
devises should be unobstructed and safe at all times.
All electrical installations for direct wired models (those without a plug/receptacle connection) must include a power disconnect near the kiln and that
is easily accessible and safe for emergency power shutoff.
Electrical Safety
A licensed electrician should be used for all electrical installation and service. All applicable local, state and federal electrical codes must be
followed.
Use correct voltage, wire size and fuse or breakers. Kiln electrical requirements are located on the kiln nameplate. Make sure all electrical connections
are tight. Avoid using aluminum wire.
Always use the proper electrical receptacle. Never alter the kiln cordset or cordset plug. Alterations can be dangerous. Alterations will void any
warranties along with nullifying any Listing Agency markings.
Evenheat recommends that a voltage check be performed before placing the kiln into service, ideally before actual purchase. Operating
voltage varies. The kilns operating voltage (printed on the kilns nameplate) must match the applied voltage (actual electrical service voltage).
If it does not, do not install or operate the kiln as potential electrical and fire hazards exist. Contact Evenheat for guidance in such cases.
The kiln must be properly grounded.
Unplug or disconnect the kiln from the electrical service before accessing the chamber for servicing or vacuuming. Do not attempt to touch
or replace the heating elements while the kiln is plugged in or connected to the electrical service. Electric shock may result in serious injury
or death.
Never, ever use an extension cord to operate a kiln.
The Studio Pro 17 consumes 18A at 120V. The power circuit requires the use of a “Fully Rated” 20A breaker.

Overview

The provided manual describes the Evenheat Studio Pro 17 STP/RM, an electric kiln designed for firing glass materials. This is an installation and operating manual for the North American model, published in January 2019.

Function Description

The Evenheat Studio Pro 17 STP/RM is an electric kiln primarily designed for firing glass materials. Its core function is to heat a chamber to precise temperatures for processes like slumping, fusing, and other glass-related applications. The kiln is equipped with advanced controls (Set-Pro & Rampmaster) for programming firing schedules, allowing for both quick "Express Mode" use and custom program definitions. A key safety feature is the automatic power interrupt switch, which disconnects electrical power from heating elements when the lid or chamber is opened, ensuring safe access. The kiln is designed for use in a covered, well-ventilated area and can be placed on a counter/bench top or on its included metal stand.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Electrical Requirements:
    • 120V Models: Requires a dedicated 120V electrical service using a NEMA 5-20R single outlet receptacle. Wiring should be at least 12AWG, and the circuit breaker must be a 20A "Fully Rated" (100% breaker). The Studio Pro 17 consumes 18A at 120V.
    • 240V Models: Requires a 240V electrical service using a 6-20R receptacle. Wiring should be at least 12AWG, and the circuit breaker should be rated at 20A.
  • Placement Clearances:
    • Minimum 12 inches (31cm) from combustible wall surfaces or objects.
    • Minimum 36 inches from any ceiling surface in all opened and closed positions.
    • If placed on a masonry surface, it must extend at least 12 inches beyond the kiln's outside perimeter.
  • Construction:
    • Lid: Constructed of a special fiber material for excellent thermal properties and light weight. Heating elements are positioned on the surface for maximum heat transfer and firing efficiency.
    • Stand: The kiln comes with a metal stand for floor placement, requiring assembly (2 22-1/8" frame angles, 2 27-1/2" frame angles, 4 16" legs, 4 stand feet, 16 bolts, 16 nuts). The kiln base must be secured to the stand with 4 nuts and bolts.
  • Controls: Set-Pro and Rampmaster controls are included, offering both Express Mode and custom programming capabilities.
  • Maximum Temperature Rating: Users must not operate the kiln over the maximum temperature rating printed on the nameplate.

Usage Features

  • Dual Access Design: The Studio Pro 17 offers both top and front access to the chamber.
    • Top Entry: Allows for vertical forming tools, easy placement of large ware (slumping molds), and excellent ventilation through the hinged lid.
    • Front Entry: Provides wide-open access to the kiln floor, ideal for ware placement that cannot be moved once positioned, and enables horizontal forming tools. The hinged action brings the chamber down with precision.
  • Wide and Sturdy Handles: Equipped with two wide, sturdy bar handles, corner-mounted and placed away from the kiln for easy, gloved hand operation.
  • Bench Top or Floor Placement: Can be used on a counter/bench top or with the included stand. The supporting surface must be non-combustible.
  • Automatic Power Interrupt Switch: Disconnects electrical power from heating elements when the lid or chamber is opened, enhancing safety during access.
  • Pre-Fire Procedure: Evenheat recommends a test fire before initial use to familiarize the user with kiln functions and to allow elements to form a protective oxide barrier, burning off any light lubricant from manufacturing (which may produce light smoke).
  • Firing Surface: Always fire ware on a kiln shelf prepared with kiln wash or glass separator, or on fiber "papers." Never fire directly on the kiln floor to prevent sticking and damage.
  • Loading:
    • Top Loading: Lift the lid handle, and a built-in stop holds it open. Avoid positioning ware directly at the thermocouple. Ensure ware does not contact the lid when closed.
    • Front Loading: Lift the front chamber handle, and a built-in stop holds it open. Place the shelf squarely on the floor. Gently lower the chamber to check for shelf clearance, and ensure ware clears the thermocouple.
  • Power Switch: Located on the kiln control panel, it must be thrown to the ON position to illuminate the temperature control and enable programming.
  • Voltage Check: Evenheat recommends performing a voltage check before purchase and installation to ensure the kiln's operating voltage matches the applied electrical service voltage to prevent electrical and fire hazards.

Maintenance Features

  • Electrical Disconnection: Always unplug or disconnect the kiln from the electrical service before performing any maintenance, servicing, or vacuuming to prevent electric shock.
  • Part Replacement: Replace any worn, damaged, or defective parts immediately with Evenheat Kiln replacement parts only. Discontinue use until parts are replaced.
  • Vacuuming: When vacuuming the kiln, use only HEPA filters on the vacuum to prevent lung injury from brick dust and refractory materials.
  • Electrical Connection Inspection: Periodically inspect all electrical service connections for wear.
  • Chamber Jacket Clamps: Periodically check chamber jacket clamps for tightness and tighten as necessary.
  • Chamber Security Bar: Inspect the hardware for the Chamber Security Bar periodically for damage and wear. If not operating properly, discontinue use until repaired or adjusted.
  • Cordset/Plug Integrity: Never alter the kiln cordset or cordset plug. If the cord, plug, or receptacle becomes damaged, discontinue use and replace immediately.
