SYMPTOMS OF CO POISONING
The follo wing sympt oms may be related to CARBON MON OXIDE POIS ONIN G and should be discussed with ALL members of th e household.
Mild exposure: H eadaches, running n ose, sore eyes, of ten described as “flu” -like symptoms;
Medium exposure: Dizziness, drowsiness, vomiting;
Extreme Exposure: Unconsciousness, brain damage, death.
Many cas es of reported C ARBON MON OXIDE POIS ONING indicate that while victims a re aware they are not well, they become so
disoriented they a re unable to save thems elves by eit her exiting the building or calling for assistance.
Some individuals ar e more sensitive to C O than others, including people with ca rdiac or re spiratory problems, inf ants, un born babies, pregnant moth ers, or elderly peo ple
can be more quickly and severely affec ted by CO. Members of s ensitive populations should consult their doc tors for a dvice on t aking additional p recaut ions.
THE FOLLOWING CONDITIONS CAN RESULT IN TRANSIENT CO SITUATIONS:
1. Excessive spillage or reverse venting o f fuel appliances caused by out door con ditions s uch as:
• Wind direction and/or velocity, including high, gusty winds. Heav y air in the ven t pipes (cold/humid air with ex tended p eriods between cycles).
• Negative pressure differential resulting from the use of exhau st fans.
• Several a ppliances running a t the same time competing for limit ed fresh a ir.
• Vent pipe co nnections vibrating loose from clo thes dryers, fur naces, or water heaters.
• Obstructions in or unconventional vent pipe de signs whic h can amplify the above situations.
2. Extended operation of unvented fuel burning devices (range, oven, fireplace).
3. Temperature inversions, which can t rap exhau st close t o the groun d.
4. Car idling in an open or closed attached garage, or near a home.
GENER AL LIMITATIONS OF CO ALARMS
This CO A larm is intended for residential use. I t is not inte nded for us e in indust rial application s where Occupatio nal Safe ty
and Health Adminis tration (OSH A) requirement s for carb on monoxide detectors must be met.
CO alarm s may not wake n all individuals. If c hildren or o thers do n ot readily waken to the s ound of the CO alarm, or if there are infan ts or family
members with mobili ty limit ations, make sure that someone is assig ned to assist them in t he event of an emergency.
CO Alar ms will not work without power. This Alarm contains a sealed, non-replaceable ba tter y.
CO Alar ms for Sol ar or Wind E nergy users and battery backup power systems: AC power ed CO Ala rms should only be operated with true or pure sine wave inverter s. Operating this Alarm
with mos t battery-powered UP S (uninterruptible power supply) prod ucts or square wave or “quasi sine w ave” inverters will da mage the A larm. If you are not sure about your inverter or
UPS t ype, plea se consul t with the m anufac turer to verify.
This CO A larm will not sense carbon monoxide tha t does not reach the sensor. This C O Alarm will only sens e CO at the s ensor. CO may b e present in other areas. Doo rs or other obstr uctions
may affe ct the rate at which C O reaches the CO Alarm. For t his reason, if bedroom door s are usually closed at night, we r ecommend y ou insta ll a CO Alarm in each bed room and in the
hallway between them.
CO Alar ms may not sense CO on an other level of the home. For example, a CO Alarm on the second level, n ear the bedrooms, may not sense CO in the ba sement.
For this reason, one CO Alarm may not give adequate w arning. C omplete c overage is recommended. Place CO Alar ms on each level of the home.
CO Alar ms may not be heard. The alarm hor n loudnes s meets or exceeds current UL standar ds of 85 dB a t 10 feet (3 mete rs). However, if the CO A larm is ins talled ou tside
the bedroom, it may no t wake up a sound sleeper o r one who has recentl y used drugs or has been drinking a lcoholic beverage s. This is especiall y true if the door is clo sed or
only par tly open. Even pers ons who are awake may not hear the alarm horn if the sound i s blocked by distanc e or closed doors. N oise fro m traf fic, stereo, radio, television, air
conditi oner, or other applianc es may also prevent alert pers ons from h earing th e alarm horn. This C O Alarm is n ot intend ed for people who are hearing impaired.
CO Alar ms are not a substit ute for a smoke alarm. A lthough fire is a source of carbon monoxide, this C O Alarm d oes not sense
smoke or fir e. This CO Alarm senses CO that may be escaping unnoticed from malfunctioning
furnace s, appliances, or other sour ces. Early warning of fire requires the installation of sm oke alarms.
CO Alar ms are not a substit ute for life insurance. Though these C O Alarms warn again st increasing CO levels, BR K Brands , Inc. doe s not warr ant
or imply in any w ay that they will protect lives from CO poi soning. H omeowners and renters must still insure their lives.
CO Alar ms have a limited life. Al though the CO Alarm and all of i ts parts have pas sed many stringen t tests and are designed to be as
reliable a s possible, any of the se parts could fail at any time. Therefore, you mus t test your CO Alar m weekly.
CO Alar ms are not foolproof. Like all ot her electronic dev ices, CO Alarms have limitations. They can only detect C O that reaches their s ensors. They
may not give early warning to rising CO levels i f the CO is coming from a t remote part of the home, away fr om the CO A larm.
SILENCING THE END OF LIFE SIGNAL
This silen ce feature can temporarily q uiet the End of Life warning “chir p” for 8 hour s up to 7 days. You c an silence the End of L ife warning
“chirp” by pre ssing the Silence bu tton. T he horn will chirp, ack nowledging that the End of Lif e feature has been ac tivated.

WHAT LEVELS OF CO CAUSE AN AL ARM?
Canadia n Stand ards As sociat ion 6.19-01 requires re sidential CO Ala rms to sound when expo sed to levels of CO and ex posure
times as de scribed b elow. They are measured in part s per million (ppm) of CO over time (in minutes).
CSA 6.19 Required Alar m Points*:
• If the ala rm is expos ed to 40 0 ppm of CO, I T MUS T AL ARM BETWEEN 4 and 15 MINU TES .
• If the ala rm is expos ed to 150 ppm of C O, IT MU ST AL ARM BET WEE N 10 and 50 MI NUT ES.
• If the ala rm is expos ed to 70 ppm of CO, IT MUST ALARM BETWE EN 60 and 240 MIN UTE S.
* Approximately 10% C OHb exp osure at levels of 10% to 9 5% Relati ve Humidit y (RH ).
The unit is d esigned not to alarm w hen expos ed to a cons tant levelof 30 ppm f or 30 days . CO Alarms are designed to ala rm befor e
there is an immediate li fe threat. Since you cannot se e or smell CO, never assume it’s not present.
• An exposure to 100 ppm o f CO for 20 minutes may n ot affe ct averag e, healthy adults, b ut after 4 hours th e same level may cause headaches.
• An exposure to 40 0 ppm of CO may cause headaches in average, hea lthy adults after 35 minutes, but can cause dea th after 2 hours.
This CO A larm measures exposure to C O over time. I t alarms if CO levels ar e extrem ely high in a short period of time, o r if CO level s reach a cer tain
minimum over a lo ng period of time. The CO Alarm generally sounds an alarm bef ore the onset of symp toms in aver age, healt hy adults.
GAS DETECTION AT TYPICAL TEMPERATURE AND HUMIDIT Y RANGES:
The CO Alarm is not f ormulated to detec t CO levels below 30 ppm typically. UL tested for false alarm resista nce to Met hane (500 ppm), Butane (300 ppm), Heptane (5 00 ppm), Et hyl Acet ate (20 0
ppm), Isop ropyl Al cohol (2 00 ppm) and C arbon D ioxide (5 000 ppm). Values measure gas a nd vapor concentr ations in parts per million. A udible Alarm: 85 dB minimum at 10 feet ( 3 meters).

This Class B digital apparatus complies with C anadian I CES-003 . This device complie s with Industry Canada licence-exempt RS S standard(s). Operation is subject to the following two
conditi ons: (1) this d evice may no t cause interfer ence, and (2) this device must accept any int erference, inclu ding inter ference that may cause undesired oper ation of t he device.
SYMPTOMS OF CO POISONING
The follo wing sympt oms may be related to CARBON MON OXIDE POIS ONIN G and should be discussed with ALL members of th e household.
Mild exposure: H eadaches, running n ose, sore eyes, of ten described as “flu” -like symptoms;
Medium exposure: Dizziness, drowsiness, vomiting;
TESTING & MAINTENANCE

Operating this Alarm

furnace s, appliances, or other sour ces.
