Overview

The Fisherbrand Portable Series is a line of balances designed for various laboratory and industrial applications, offering a range of weighing capacities from 120g to 6000g. These balances are versatile, featuring modes for parts counting with auto optimization, display hold, totalization, percentage weighing, and specific gravity determination (on certain models).

Function Description:

The core function of the Portable Series balances is precise weighing. They can operate on either battery power (four "AA" batteries, not included) or AC power (AC adapter included). The balances are equipped with a 6-digit LCD display that shows weight readings and various icons to indicate specific functions and status.

  • Weighing: The primary mode allows for straightforward weight measurement. The display can be tared to zero out container weights, and negative readings are shown when material is removed from a tared container.
  • Parts Counting (PC): When enabled, this mode allows users to count multiple identical parts by placing a reference quantity on the platform. Two counting modes are available: standard and enhanced. In standard mode, the balance calculates the quantity based on the average weight of the initial reference quantity. Enhanced mode allows for adding additional parts (equal to or less than the original reference number) to improve the accuracy of the average part weight.
  • Percentage Weighing (%): This mode enables users to place a reference weight on the balance, which is then set as 100%. Subsequent loads are displayed as a percentage of this reference weight.
  • Display Hold (Hold): This feature captures and stores the highest stable weight value measured. The stability indicator blinks when in this mode, and units cannot be changed.
  • Totalize (Total): This mode allows for storing a series of weight measurements. The totalized weight is indicated by a blinking "t" icon and the current unit. The totalized weight remains in memory until cleared or reset, with a limit of 999,999 units.
  • Specific Gravity (SPEC.Gr): Available on certain models with an optional accessory kit, this mode calculates the specific gravity of a sample. This involves weighing the sample in air (suspended from a hook below the balance) and then in water. The formula used is (dry weight) / (dry weight - wet weight). The specific gravity value is indicated by a "G" icon and has no unit of measure.
  • Weigh Below: This additional feature allows for weighing items suspended below the balance, useful for specific gravity/density determination or when the item is too large for the platform. The balance needs to be elevated and leveled for this operation, and a fine wire is attached to a built-in hook at the bottom.

  • Pan Size: Round models have a diameter of 4.7 inches (120 mm). Rectangular models are 6.5 x 5.6 inches (165 x 142 mm).
  • Dimensions (WxHxD): 7.5 x 2.2 x 8.3 inches (192 x 54 x 210 mm).
  • Net Weight: 1.5 / 0.7 lb/kg for some models, 1.8 / 0.8 lb/kg for others.
  • Power Requirements: AC Adapter (supplied) or 4 AA batteries (not included).
  • Stabilization Time: 3 seconds.
  • Operating Temperature Range: 50° - 104°F (10° - 40°C).
  • Display: LCD with 0.6 inch (15 mm) high digits.
  • Tare Range: To capacity by subtraction.
  • Over Range Capacity: Capacity +90d.
  • Security: Integral security bracket for optional external cable and lock.

Usage Features:

The balances are operated using two main buttons: "ON/ZERO Off" and "PRINT Unit".

  • ON/ZERO Off Button:
    • Primary Function (ON/ZERO): Turns on the balance or zeros the display if already on.
    • Secondary Function (Off): Turns off the balance (hold for 3 seconds). In Display Hold or Totalize mode, a long press exits the mode without turning off the balance.
    • Menu Function: An extended long press (>5 seconds) during power-up enters the Menu mode. A short press accepts a setting.
  • PRINT Unit Button:
    • Primary Function (PRINT): Sends a print command to the interface port. In Display Hold or Totalize mode, a short press enters that mode.
    • Secondary Function (Unit): Scrolls through units (press and hold, release on desired unit).
    • Menu Function: Bypasses the displayed setting.
  • Menu Navigation: The balance features four main menus: CAL (Calibration), SETUP, UNITS, and END. Navigation involves short or long presses of the ON/ZERO Off and PRINT Unit buttons to select, accept, or bypass menu items.
  • Calibration: Both Span Calibration (zero and a specified weight) and Linearity Calibration (zero, mid-scale, and full-scale weights) are supported. The Lock Switch must be off before calibration.
  • Shipping Lock: A pointer on top of the balance must be turned 90 degrees counter-clockwise to unlock the balance for use.
  • Platform Installation: Rectangular platforms are rotated counter-clockwise into the subplatform until locked, while round platforms are placed straight down.
  • Draft Shield: A draft shield is included for 120g models to minimize air current interference.
  • Lock Switch: Located under the balance, this switch locks out menu functions to prevent unauthorized changes.

Maintenance Features:

  • Cleaning: The housing and platform should be kept clean for proper operation. A cloth dampened with a mild detergent can be used. Debris under the platform should be removed.
  • Storage: Calibration masses should be stored in a safe, dry place. The AC adapter should be unplugged when not in use, and batteries removed for long-term storage.
  • Troubleshooting: A comprehensive troubleshooting guide is provided to address common issues such as no display (power adapter/dead batteries), flashing battery indicator (weak batteries), incorrect weight readings (out of calibration/not zeroed), calibration procedure failure (incorrect masses), inability to display weight in a specific unit (unit not activated/mode prevents change), unstable readings (drafts/vibrations), and error codes (internal/external problems).
  • Warranty: Fisherbrand balances are warranted against defects in materials and workmanship for a specified period from the date of delivery. The warranty is void if the product is damaged by accident, misuse, exposure to corrosive/radioactive materials, foreign material ingress, or unauthorized service/modification.
