This document describes the FitStar® series of pumps, manufactured by Hugo Lahme GmbH, designed for use in swimming pool systems. The manual provides comprehensive information on the function, technical specifications, usage, and maintenance of these pumps, which are available in gun metal, bronze, and stainless steel (V4A) variants.
Function Description
The FitStar® pumps are designed for drawing water from swimming pools and simultaneously supplying it to counter-current swimming systems, massage jets, water attractions, or filter systems. Their primary function is to circulate and filter pool water, ensuring cleanliness and proper water features. The media-contacting parts are predominantly made of gun metal or bronze, ensuring excellent corrosion resistance against swimming pool water. The pump operates with an insert shaft that is shrunk onto the motor shaft, serving as the pump shaft on which the impeller is mounted. A reliable seal between the swimming pool water and the electric motor is achieved by a mechanical seal located on the insert shaft hub. The pumps are driven by either single-phase (alternating current) or three-phase (rotating current) motors.
Important Technical Specifications
The FitStar® pumps are available in various models with different power outputs and flow rates, catering to diverse pool system requirements. Key technical specifications include:
- Materials: Media-contacting parts are primarily gun metal, bronze, or V4A stainless steel, offering high corrosion resistance.
- Motor Type: Available with single-phase (alternating current) and three-phase (rotating current) motors.
- Protection Class: Motors are rated IP44 or IP54.
- Ambient Temperature: Maximum ambient temperature for operation is 40°C.
- Electrical Connection:
- Three-phase motors: Minimum cable cross-section of 5 x 2.5 mm².
- Single-phase motors: Minimum cable cross-section of 3 x 2.5 mm².
- Power supplies must be protected upstream by a residual current device (FI) with a nominal current of ≤ 30 mA.
- Compliance with DIN VDE 0100, part 702 (equivalent to C15-100 & 702) is required for pool pump installations.
- Water Quality Limits for Gun Metal and Stainless Steel Fittings:
- Disinfectant content: up to 1.0 mg/l
- Chloride content: up to 500 mg/l
- pH value: 6.5 - 9.5
- Water Quality Limits for Bronze Installation Parts:
- Salt content: up to 6%
- For salt electrolysis systems operating by the through-feed method, a salinity of at least 0.35% (equivalent to 2,135 mg/l chloride) is required. In such systems, only bronze fittings are permitted. Using gun metal with salt electrolysis or unregulated salt electrolysis will void the warranty.

Usage Features
- Safety-Conscious Operation: The manual emphasizes the importance of reading and understanding all safety instructions, national accident prevention regulations, and internal operating procedures.
- Installation: Installation must be performed by authorized and qualified personnel. Moving parts (e.g., impeller) protection must not be removed during operation. Leakages must be prevented to avoid danger to personnel and the environment.
- First Start-up:
- The pump must only be operated with a filled pool. Dry running is strictly prohibited.
- Ensure the power supply is disconnected before starting work.
- Slowly fill the suction line and pump with water.
- Before initial operation or after long periods of inactivity, check the pump for smooth operation by manually turning the impeller (after removing the fan cover).
- Ensure all shut-off valves in the suction and pressure lines are fully open.
- Connect the power supply and start the pump, then check for leakages.
- Transport and Storage: Proper transport and storage are crucial. Avoid temporary storage in environments with high humidity and fluctuating temperatures to prevent condensation, which can damage windings and metal parts, voiding the warranty.
Maintenance Features
- Servicing, Inspection, and Assembly: All maintenance work must be carried out by authorized and qualified personnel who have thoroughly studied the operating instructions.
- Work during Standstill: Work on the system is only permitted when it is at a standstill. The described procedure for stopping the system must be strictly followed.
- Reassembly: After maintenance, all safety and protective devices must be reinstalled. The points listed under "Initial Start-up" must be observed before recommissioning.
- Troubleshooting: The manual includes a section for troubleshooting common issues, such as:
- Wrong rotation direction of the pump.
- The intake line is leaky.
- Leakage between the pump housing and the motor unit.
- The pump seal and/or the O-ring in the bearing bracket are defective.
- The motor protection switch turns off.
- The nominal current of the motor and the local circumstances have to comply with the calibration of the motor protection switch.
- The pump is overheated – the motor has to cool down.
- The residual current operation device turns off.
- The installation has to be checked by an electrician.
- Replacement of Axial Face Seal and O-ring: Detailed steps are provided for replacing the mechanical seal and O-ring, including:
- Disconnecting power and closing valves.
- Disassembling the motor from the pump housing.
- Removing the impeller and checking the pump shaft and seal for damage.
- Replacing the pump seal and O-ring.
- Reassembling the pump and motor.
- Performing a test run and checking for leakages.
- Unauthorized Modifications: Any conversion or modification of the system is only permitted after consultation with the manufacturer. Using manufacturer-approved accessories and original spare parts ensures safety. The use of non-approved parts will void the warranty and liability.
- Spare Parts: Bronze spare parts are available upon request.
The document also includes characteristic curves for both three-phase and single-phase pumps, illustrating their delivery height (Förderhöhe) versus delivery rate (Fördermenge) at different power outputs. A CE declaration of conformity is provided, stating that the pumps comply with relevant EC directives (Machinery Directive, WEEE, RoHS) and harmonized standards (EN 60335-1, EN 60335-2-41).
