Rivetsarealwaysusedwithadhesive.
Whenpreparingtoattacharivet-bonded
part,identify:
• whichtypeofrivetorrivetsare
recommendedbythevehicle
maker.
• ifahole,dimpling,or
countersinkingisnecessary.
• whichtypeofclampswillbe
required.
• whatpreparationstepsare
requiredforthematingflanges.
• theproperadhesiveand
applicationrequirements.
HemFlanges
Aropehemflangeisdesignedtopreventcrackingas
itisbeingmade.
Hemflangesarecommonlyusedon:
• doorskins.
• wheelhouseflanges.
Aluminumhemflangesaremadeatthe
vehiclemakerbeforethe6000series
aluminumisbake-hardened.Bydoing
this,thealuminumisformedwhileitis
stillsoft.
Aropehemflangeisusedforinstalling
replacementpartsthatarealready
heat-treated.Aropehemflangeallows
foralargerradiustobemadeasthe
replacementpanelisinstalledonthe
part.
Thickermaterialwillbemoredifficulttorollaflange
withoutcracking.
Whenhemmingapanel,considerthe:
• alloyofthealuminum.Some
alloyslike5XXXseriesalloy
materialsgettheirstrengthfrom
workhardening.Thismeansas
theflangeisbeingrolledover
andset,theareawherethepart
isbeingbentisgainingstrength.
