Automatic gearbox
Functional principle of the auto-
ma
tic gearbox
Description
The vehicle is equipped with an automatic
gearbox.
The automatic gearbox is a gearbox which
uses dual-clutch technology to change
gear automatically. It uses a dual clutch
and two independent gear train halves to
enable very fast gear changes with no loss
of torque. It therefore combines the per-
formance and economy of a manual gear-
box with the comfort and convenience of
a standard automatic gearbox.
How the system works
When driving, engine power is transferred
to the drive axle via the gearbox. In order to
change gears, the power transmission be-
tween the engine and the gearbox has to
be interrupted. This is what the clutch is for.
With the automatic gearbox with its two
gear train halves, one gear train half is al-
ways connected under load to the engine.
Before a gear shi, another gear is always
preselected in the load-free second gear
train half. The clutch on the non-driven
gear is closed and the other is opened at
the same time. This is what makes very fast
gear changes possible.
However, just as with a manual gearbox,
the clutch in the automatic gearbox is also
subject to wear. Regular maintenance is
necessary depending on the type of auto-
matic gearbox. In the event of a fault in one
gear train half, the automatic gearbox also
allows one gear train half to be deactivated
and the trip to be continued using the other
gear train half → page 153. If this happens,
have the system checked as soon as possi-
ble by a suitably qualified workshop.

The selected position is shown on the in-
strument cluster displa
y and on the lower
part of the centre console when the ignition
is switched on → Fig. 104.
The gear shi pattern is shown on the in-
strument cluster display when the brake is
applied or when a position is engaged.
– Parking lock
T
he drive wheels are blocked. Engage only
when the vehicle is stationary.
To engage the parking lock, press the P
button → Fig. 104
1 .
If the engine is switched o in gear selec
tor
position D/S or R, the gearbox automati-
cally engages the parking lock P to prevent
the vehicle from rolling away.
If the engine is switched o in position N,
the gearbox remains in neutral position N
for around 30 minutes and only then en-
gages the parking lock P (car wash func-
tion) → page 143.
– Reverse gear
R
everse gear is selected. Engage only when
the vehicle is stationary.
