Overview

The Forest Garden 2.4M Ultima Pergola Kit is a garden structure designed to enhance outdoor spaces, providing a framework for climbing plants and a decorative feature. This manual provides comprehensive instructions for its assembly, along with essential information regarding tools, components, and safety.

Function Description:

The Ultima Pergola serves primarily as an aesthetic addition to gardens, creating a defined space or walkway. It is designed to support climbing plants, allowing them to grow over the rafters and posts, eventually forming a natural canopy. The structure itself is not load-bearing, meaning it is not intended to support heavy weights beyond the plants it is designed for. Its primary function is to create a visually appealing architectural element in a garden setting, offering a sense of enclosure or a transition point between different garden areas.

Important Technical Specifications:

The pergola kit is identified by the model name "2.4M Ultima Pergola Kit" and the fixing pack code "UPERG24FP". The issue number of the manual is 0221.

The kit includes several key components:

  • Slotted Posts: 4 pieces, each measuring 95 x 95 x 2400mm. These are the main vertical supports of the pergola, featuring notches to accommodate the rafters.
  • Rafters: 8 pieces, each measuring 95 x 47.5 x 2400mm. These are the horizontal beams that form the roof structure, designed to fit into the slots of the posts.
  • Curved Corner Braces: 8 pieces. These provide additional structural support and aesthetic detail at the corners where the posts and rafters connect.

The assembled roof structure has a width of 1650mm between the posts. The corner braces extend approximately 280mm from the post.

The fixing pack contains the following screws:

  • 5 x 60mm Screws: 24 pieces. These are used for securing the assembled roof to the notched posts and for attaching the angle braces.
  • 3.5 x 25mm Screws: 48 pieces. These are used for fixing the U-Brackets to the rafters.

Usage Features:

The pergola is designed for outdoor use in gardens. It requires a level ground for installation to ensure stability. The manual strongly advises anchoring the pergola to the ground for enhanced stability, offering two options for purchase separately:

  • For Patio/Decking (Hard Surfaces): Easy-Fit Fencebase - 65mm (FBEF65). This fixture supports 130mm of the post within it.
  • For Grass/Soil (Soft Surfaces): Easy-Fit Fencefast (FEF6575). This spike needs to be inserted into the ground by 750mm and also supports 130mm of the post.

The assembly process is detailed in several steps:

  1. Preparation: Before full construction, the chosen anchoring fixtures should be applied to each leg.
  2. Rafter Assembly: Six U-Brackets are fixed onto two of the rafters, spread evenly using provided measurements (303mm, 301.5mm intervals). These are secured with 3.5 x 25mm screws. The remaining rafters are then placed into these U-Brackets, ensuring even positioning at overhanging ends, and secured at each side with 3.5 x 25mm screws.
  3. Roof Placement: The assembled roof structure is placed onto the notched posts. The posts should be distanced 1650mm from each other. The rafters are carefully knocked into the notches and fixed using 2 x 60mm screws per post.
  4. Brace Installation: Each curved corner brace is secured with 2 x 60mm screws, following the visual guidance provided.

Maintenance Features:

The timber used in the pergola kit is "TREATED TIMBER CONTAINING A BIOCIDAL PRODUCT CONTROL OF WOOD DESTROYING ORGANISMS." This indicates that the wood has been treated to resist decay and insect infestation, which is crucial for its longevity in an outdoor environment.

The active ingredients in the treatment include: Propiconazole, Tebuconazole, IPBC, Permethrine, Benzyl-C12-16-Alkyldimethyl Chlorides (Dip Treated), Basic Copper Carbonate, DDA Carbonate, DDA Chloride (Pressure Treated).

Safety and Handling:

  • Assembly: Requires a minimum of 2 adults due to the weight of the components.
  • Tools: The following tools (not supplied) are recommended: Tape Measure, Pozidrive Screwdriver, Drill & 2mm Drill Bit, Hammer, Ladder, and Spirit Level.
  • Pre-drilling: Always pre-drill before screwing to prevent wood splitting.
  • Children: Plastic bags and small parts should be kept away from children.
  • Treated Timber Precautions:
    • Wear gloves when handling the treated timber.
    • Avoid inhalation of sawdust.
    • Do not use the timber in contact with drinking water or food.
    • Do not use for animal bedding or in fish ponds.
    • Dispose of treated wood responsibly.
