This document serves as the user manual for the Franke FSMD 508 extractor hood, providing essential recommendations, usage instructions, and maintenance guidelines to ensure safe and efficient operation.
Function Description
The Franke FSMD 508 extractor hood is designed exclusively for domestic use to effectively eliminate kitchen smells and fumes generated during cooking. It operates by drawing air from the cooking area, filtering it, and then either discharging it outside through an exhaust flue or recirculating it back into the room after purification, depending on the installation type. The hood features a motor speed adjustment to control the suction power and integrated lighting to illuminate the cooking surface. Its primary function is to maintain a clean and fresh kitchen environment by removing airborne grease, odors, and steam.
Usage Features
The FSMD 508 extractor hood is designed for straightforward operation with a focus on user safety and convenience.
Installation and Safety:
- Minimum Safety Distance: A minimum safety distance of 650 mm must be maintained between the cooker top and the extractor hood. However, some models may allow for lower installation heights; users should refer to specific paragraphs on working dimensions and installation for details.
- Power Supply: Users must ensure that the mains voltage corresponds to the rating plate located inside the hood. For Class I appliances, adequate earthing of the domestic power supply is crucial.
- Exhaust Flue Connection: If the hood is configured for external extraction, it should be connected to an exhaust flue with a minimum diameter of 120 mm. The flue route should be as short as possible to maximize efficiency.
- Prohibited Connections: The extractor hood must not be connected to exhaust ducts that carry combustion fumes from other appliances such as boilers or fireplaces.
- Aeration Requirements: When the extractor is used in conjunction with non-electrical appliances (e.g., gas-burning appliances), sufficient aeration must be guaranteed in the room to prevent the backflow of exhaust gas. The kitchen must have an opening that communicates directly with the open air to ensure the entry of clean air. The negative pressure in the room must not exceed 0.04 mbar to prevent fumes from being drawn back into the room by the cooker hood.
- Air Discharge: Air must not be discharged into a flue used for exhausting fumes from appliances burning gas or other fuels, unless the appliance is designed to discharge air back into the room.
- Power Cable Damage: In the event of damage to the power cable, it must be replaced by the manufacturer or a qualified technical service department to prevent risks.
- Gas Hob Distance: If the installation instructions for a gas hob specify a greater distance than the general recommendation, that greater distance must be observed.
- Secure Installation: Only the provided screws and small parts should be used to support the hood. Failure to properly install screws or fixing devices can result in electrical hazards.
- Mains Connection: The hood should be connected to the mains through a two-pole switch with a contact gap of at least 3 mm.
- Open Flames: Never leave high naked flames under the hood when it is in operation.
- Flame Intensity: Adjust flame intensity to direct it onto the bottom of the pan only, ensuring it does not engulf the sides of the pan.
- Deep Fat Frying: Deep fat fryers must be continuously monitored during use, as overheated oil can burst into flames.
- No Flambéing: Do not flambé under the range hood due to the risk of fire.
- Accessible Parts: Users are cautioned that accessible parts may become hot when used with cooking appliances.
Controls:
The FSMD 508 features intuitive controls for lighting and motor speed adjustment.
- Lights: To turn the lights on, press the dial and release it so it pops out. To turn the lights off, push the dial back inwards to the off position.
- Motor Speed Adjustment: To adjust the suction speed, press the dial and release it so it pops out. Then, turn the dial to select one of the available suction speeds.

Maintenance Features
Regular maintenance is crucial for the safe and efficient operation of the Franke FSMD 508 extractor hood and to prevent fire hazards.
General Cleaning:
- Hood Exterior: The hood should be cleaned using a damp cloth and a neutral liquid detergent.
- Disposal: The symbol on the product or its packaging indicates that the product should not be treated as household waste. Instead, it should be handed over to an applicable collection point for the recycling of electrical and electronic equipment. Correct disposal helps prevent potential negative consequences for the environment and human health. For detailed information on recycling, users should contact their local city office, household waste disposal service, or the shop where the product was purchased.
Filter Maintenance:
- Power Disconnection: Always switch off or unplug the appliance from the mains supply before carrying out any maintenance work.
- Filter Replacement/Cleaning Schedule: Filters must be cleaned and/or replaced after specified time periods to prevent fire hazards. Failure to carry out cleaning as indicated will result in a fire hazard.
- Activated Charcoal Filter (W): The activated charcoal filter is not washable and cannot be regenerated. It must be replaced approximately every 4 months of operation, or more frequently with particularly heavy usage.
- Grease Filters (Z): The grease filters must be cleaned every 2 months of operation, or more frequently with particularly heavy usage. These filters can be washed in a dishwasher.
Lighting Maintenance:
