Overview

The Giuliano S.p.A. Automotive Equipment manual describes the use of HELP and PRESS ARM accessories for mounting and removing tires. These accessories are designed to facilitate tire changing operations, particularly for "zero pressure" and low-profile tires, which can be challenging to handle manually.

Function Description:

The HELP and PRESS ARM are auxiliary devices that attach to tire changers (specifically models S222, S225, S224, S231, S232, and S112F for PRESS ARM only). Their primary function is to assist in manipulating the tire bead during both removal and mounting processes, reducing the physical effort required and improving efficiency.

Tire Removal:

  • Clamping Assistance: When manually clamping a wheel onto the turntable, especially with difficult tires, the PRESS ARM can be used to push the wheel downward, making the clamping process easier and ensuring the rim doesn't slip out of the jaws.
  • Bead Positioning: For rims with an "overturned" groove, a WHEEL PRESSING CONE (part no. 9214251) can be used in conjunction with the assisted procedure to keep the tire pushed onto the jaws, securing the rim. If the tire bead slips back into its seat during manual tool positioning, the hexagonal arm may need to be adjusted.
  • Tool Setting: The HELP roller (if available) or the PRESS ARM press pad can be used to push the tire, allowing the tire-changing tool to be correctly set on the rim without significant effort.
  • Lever Insertion: During manual removal, pushing the tire downwards by hand to insert the bead lifting lever can be difficult. The PRESS ARM press pad can keep the tire pushed down, facilitating the insertion of the lever between the tire and the tool.
  • Bead Detachment: To remove the first bead from the rim, it's necessary to push it downwards on the side opposite the tool, positioning it at the rim groove level. The PRESS ARM press pad assists in bringing the bead into the rim groove, making detachment easier.
  • Tyre Lifting: The PRESS ARM disk can be used to lift the lower part of the tire from the left side. Manual assistance on the right side helps facilitate lever insertion and complete detachment. If both HELP and PRESS ARM are installed, both disks can be used to lift the tire from both sides.
  • Lever-Free Removal: If HELP is available, its roller can lift the lower bead over the tire edge, allowing for removal without a lever.
  • Lubrication Assistance: The HELP press pad (if available) can push the tire to facilitate greasing the rim's inner side, aiding detachment.

Tire Mounting:

  • Bead Placement: The tire's inner bead is placed on the upper side of tool A, and the outer bead on the lower side of tool B.
  • Initial Mounting: The PRESS ARM pad is positioned to the right of the tool. By hand, the tire bead section next to the tool is pushed while the turntable rotates clockwise, initiating the mounting process.
  • Combined Use (HELP and PRESS ARM): If both HELP and PRESS ARM are available, the HELP roller and PRESS ARM pad are set at the same height and at the rim groove level. Actuating the rotation control pedal proceeds with mounting.
  • Bead Adjustment: If the tire bead tends to move upwards due to tire strength, the pad should be lowered to bring the bead back to a position parallel to the turntable. The HELP roller position remains unchanged. The pad is then used to bring the tire bead back to the correct position.
  • Maintaining Bead Position: During rotation, the roller and pad are moved up and down to keep the tire bead C leveled with the rim groove D. This combined action, providing different forces from the roller and pad, is practically impossible to achieve manually or with only one accessory.
  • Completion: The turntable is turned clockwise to fully mount the tire.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Compatibility: HELP and PRESS ARM are accessories for Giuliano tire changers: S222, S225, S224, S231, S232. PRESS ARM only is compatible with S112F.
  • Tyre Types: Their combined use is essential for "zero pressure" tires. The PRESS ARM is essential for low-profile tires (from /45 to /30). They are recommended for all tire types.
  • Versatility: The PRESS ARM is noted as the more versatile of the two devices.
  • Accessory Part: WHEEL PRESSING CONE, part no. 9214251, is used for rims with an "overturned" groove.

Usage Features:

  • Assisted vs. Manual Procedures: The manual highlights both manual and assisted procedures, clearly demonstrating how the HELP and PRESS ARM devices simplify tasks that would otherwise be difficult or impossible by hand.
  • Visual Guidance: The manual extensively uses photographs with arrows and labels to illustrate correct positioning and actions for both removal and mounting.
  • Error Prevention: Specific images show "OK," "NO (too LOW)," and "NO (too HIGH)" positions of the tire bead relative to the rim groove, providing clear visual cues for correct mounting and preventing errors.
  • Reduced Effort: The core benefit emphasized is the reduction of effort for the operator, especially with challenging tire types.

Maintenance Features:

The manual does not explicitly detail maintenance features for the HELP and PRESS ARM accessories. However, as they are mechanical components of a tire changer, general maintenance practices for such equipment would apply, including:

  • Regular cleaning to prevent accumulation of dirt and debris.
  • Inspection for wear and tear on moving parts, pads, and rollers.
  • Lubrication of pivot points and sliding mechanisms as recommended by the main tire changer manual.
  • Ensuring proper functioning of hydraulic or pneumatic systems if applicable to the accessory's operation.

The document emphasizes the critical role of these accessories in modern tire service, particularly for specialized tire types, making operations safer and more efficient.
