Overview

This document describes the assembly, operation, and maintenance of the Glare Wheel EB-X6 Skylark ebike. It covers everything from unpacking the bike to charging the battery and ensuring all components are properly tightened for safe riding.

The Glare Wheel EB-X6 Skylark is an electric bicycle designed for personal transportation, offering both pedal-assist and throttle-only modes. It is available in Black, Yellow, Red, and White finishes. The bike is shipped partially assembled, requiring the user to complete a few key steps before its first ride.

Assembly Instructions:

The manual outlines a ten-step assembly process, starting with unpacking and identifying all included components. The tools provided for assembly include a screwdriver (Phillips & Slotted 2 in 1), a double open-end wrench (13mm/15mm), and Allen wrenches (5mm and 6mm). Additional tools needed are a scissor and a bike pump.

Step One: Unpack the ebike.

Users are instructed to carefully remove the frame and all parts from the cardboard box, separating the bike from foam padding. Zip ties should be cut with scissors, taking care not to damage paint, wires, or cables. The included parts are a charger, seat, toolkit, keys & fuse, manual, steer stem, and pedals. A crucial note is made about the fuse: it is not used for assembly but should be kept in a safe place for future replacement if the original fuse is damaged. Users are advised to ensure all these pieces are included with their Skylark.

Step Two: Unfolding the Fashion Frame.

Before unfolding, the bike should be stood upright, with foam padding placed under the front fork if on the ground, or on a bike assembly/repair stand to prevent damage. The frame is unfolded by turning the front wheel slightly right until both sides of the central hinge touch. To secure the hinge, the quick release lever is pulled upward to lift the hinge pin, allowing the frame to be pushed together until fully closed. Releasing the lever drops the hinge pin into place. Finally, the quick release lever is swung toward the front of the bike, parallel to the frame, and folded upward to securely lock the hinge. The manual emphasizes that the lever should offer enough resistance when closing to leave an imprint on the thumb, indicating a secure lock. A notice advises testing the bike fully after unfolding the frame and before riding.

Step Three: Install the handlebar.

This step involves installing the stem and then the handlebar. First, the stem is inserted into the steer tube. The plastic clasp is turned anticlockwise to unlock the quick release lever, which is then unfolded downward to open the stem. The bolt in the center of the stem is tightened with the supplied Allen wrench. After tightening, the quick release lever is closed to secure the stem, and the plastic clasp is turned clockwise to secure the quick release lever. Next, the handlebar is installed onto the stem by opening its quick release lever fully. The handlebar stem is inserted into the stem tube, and the handlebar is set to the desired height, ensuring it does not exceed the maximum height or fall below the minimum insertion mark. The stem is aligned so the handlebar is perpendicular to the front wheel, and then the quick release lever is closed to secure the handlebar. A "twist test" is recommended to ensure the handlebar and front wheel are properly aligned. This involves bracing the front wheel between the legs and pushing/pulling the handlebar with about 20 pounds of force, switching hands to test both sides.

Step Four: Center the headlight and adjust the angle.

The headlight needs to be centered and adjusted to illuminate the road ahead without blinding oncoming traffic. This is done by using the supplied Phillips-head screwdriver to loosen the headlight angle adjustment bolt, tilting the headlight to the optimal position, and then tightening it securely.

Step Five: Install the seat.

The seat installation begins by opening the quick release lever fully. The seat post is then inserted into the seat tube. The seat post height is adjusted to a comfortable position, making sure it is inserted past the minimum insertion point marked on the post. Finally, the quick release lever is closed to secure the seat post. If the seat post moves, the thumb nut can be used to add tension to the clamp until there is resistance when the lever is in line with the clamp bolt.

Step Six: Install the pedals.

Pedals are identified by "R" (right) and "L" (left) stamped into the end of their axles. The right pedal is threaded clockwise onto the crank on the right side of the bike, while the left pedal is reverse-threaded and tightens counterclockwise onto the crank on the left side. Users are advised to carefully thread the pedals by hand first to avoid cross-threading or damaging the threads, then further tighten them with the supplied double open-end wrench.

Step Seven: Inflate the tires.

Before riding, the tires must be inflated. Users should check that the tire beads are evenly seated around the rims. A pump with a Schrader valve and pressure gauge is used to inflate each tire to the recommended pressure indicated on the tire sidewall, avoiding over or underinflation.

Step Eight: Charge the battery.

The manual states that the Nakto bike comes partially charged. It recommends connecting the charger input plug (110/220-volt) to a power outlet for 3 to 4 hours. The charger light will turn from red to green when fully charged. A notice emphasizes plugging the charger into the battery's charging port before connecting the charger input plug to the power outlet. The electrical system should only be operated when the battery is adequately charged and secured to the frame mount.

Step Nine: Ensure all hardware is tightened properly.

A table of recommended torque values is provided for various hardware locations to ensure all components are securely fastened. This includes:

  • Front Dropout Area: Front Axle Nuts (40 Nm)
  • Handlebar Area: Stem Bolts (10 Nm), Brake Lever Clamp Bolt (6 Nm)
  • Brakes: Caliper Adapter to Frame (8-10 Nm), Pad to Caliper Arm (6 Nm), Brake Cable to Caliper Clamp (6 Nm)
  • Fenders: All Fender Mounting Bolts and Hardware (6 Nm)
  • Headlight: Headlight Angle Adjustment Bolt (6 Nm)
  • Seatpost Area: Seat Angle Adjustment Bolt (20 Nm)
  • Rear Dropout Area: Rear Axle Nuts (40 Nm), Rear Torque Arm Bolt (5 Nm), Kickstand Mounting Bolts (8 Nm)
  • Bottom Bracket and Crank Area: Bottom Bracket and Lockring (60 Nm), Crank Arm Bolt into Bottom Bracket Spindle (35 Nm), Pedal into Crank Arm (35 Nm), Chainring Bolts (10 Nm), Controller Mounting Bolts (6 Nm)

Step Ten: Register warranty card.

Users are advised to register their warranty card as soon as possible. It is also recommended to keep proof of purchase, and the original packing and box for at least two weeks from the date of purchase, as a box for returns is not provided if needed. The section concludes with "Have fun and be safe!"

Quick Start Guide:

The ebike offers two ways for power assistance:

  • Pedal Assist System (PAS): Engaged while pedaling, it provides motor assistance to propel the bike forward.
  • Twist Throttle: Located on the right side of the handlebar, it allows the rider to propel the bike forward without pedaling by twisting the grip. A warning states that the throttle is active whenever the bike is turned on and should not be used unless the rider is on the bike.

Start-Up Procedure:

  1. Turn on the battery with the key: Insert the key and turn it clockwise to position (1), which means "ON, Locked to the frame." Position (2) is "OFF, Locked to the frame," and position (3) is "OFF, Unlocked (ready for removal from the frame)."
  2. Sit on the bike.
  3. Activate the pedal assistance system: Press the red button on the right side of the handlebar.
  4. Turn on the headlight: If needed, slide the light button to the right to turn it on, and to the left to turn it off.
  5. Begin riding carefully: Hold the handlebars and start pedaling on a flat surface in a low gear (1 or 2). Most riders should be able to begin pedaling with pedal assist. The throttle can also be used to accelerate and maintain desired speed.
  6. Use the throttle: Slowly and carefully rotate the throttle backward toward the rider. More twist provides more powerful propulsion. The throttle is active when the bike is turned on, so it should not be used unless on the bike.
  7. Brake: Squeeze the brake levers to brake the bike. A safety feature disengages the motor when either the front or rear brake is applied.
  8. Deactivate the pedal assistance system: Press the red button on the right handlebar again.
  9. Turn off the battery and remove the key when parking.

Warning:

The manual includes a warning section with important safety recommendations:

  • Always wear protective gear (helmet, gloves, elbow pads, goggles) when cycling.
  • Obey all road laws applicable in your area.
  • Charge the battery during the day when someone is around; overnight charging is not recommended.
  • Follow the charging steps: plug the charger into the battery's charging port before connecting the charger input plug (110/220-volt) to the power outlet.
  • Perform a thorough safety check before every ride.
  • Read the instruction manual before the very first ride.
  • It is the user's responsibility to ensure any potential passenger is adequately experienced and healthy enough to ride safely. Serious injury or death can occur if passengers are inexperienced or in poor health.
  • Carrying baggage may reduce control of the ebike.
  • Take extra care when riding on wet and sandy surfaces, decreasing speed and increasing braking distances.
  • Do not use the throttle while dismounted to avoid accidental application. Ensure the bike is powered off when moving it while dismounted to prevent accidental throttle application.
