Overview

The HAM KEYER HK5A DELUXE ELECTRONIC KEYER is a sophisticated iambic keyer designed for amateur radio enthusiasts. It is capable of keying grid block, cathode, or solid-state transmitters, offering versatility for various radio setups. A key feature of the HK5A is its dot and dash memory and insertion circuits, which contribute to smoother and more accurate Morse code transmission.

Technical Specifications:

  • Keying Capability: Grid block, cathode, or solid-state transmitters.
  • Grid Block Output: Capable of keying a maximum negative 300 volts to ground at 10 mA of current.
  • Direct Output: Keys a maximum positive voltage of 300 volts to ground at 200 mA maximum.
  • Speed Control: Adjustable from approximately 8 to 50 Words Per Minute (WPM).
  • Power Supply: Can be powered by internal batteries (4 C cells) or an external 6-volt power supply. The external power jack requires a 2.5 MM plug with the tip connected to the positive lead.
  • Sidetone Oscillator: Built-in with front panel adjustable tone and volume controls.

Usage Features:

The HK5A features a four-position function switch on the front panel, offering different operational modes:

  • OFF: This position removes both internal and external power from the keyer. While key-up current is nominal, turning the HK5A off during periods of non-use helps extend battery life.
  • ON: In this position, the HK5A is fully operational. The internal sidetone oscillator is not active, making it suitable for users who prefer to use a transmitter with a built-in sidetone.
  • TONE: This mode activates the built-in sidetone circuit. Users can adjust the volume and pitch of the sidetone oscillator using the dedicated front panel controls.
  • TUNE: The tune position switches the output plugs to "on" for convenient transmitter tuning.

Controls:

  • SPEED CONTROL: Adjusts the keying speed from 8 to 50 WPM.
  • WEIGHT CONTROL: This control allows for lengthening the dots and dashes, which can make keying more distinctive. However, advancing it too far may result in constant keying.
  • VOLUME CONTROL: Regulates the volume of the internal sidetone oscillator.
  • TONE CONTROL: Adjusts the pitch of the internal oscillator.

Connecting the Key:

For optimal use of the HK5A's features, a squeeze-type keyer paddle, such as the Ham-Key HK-1, is recommended. The key should be connected using the provided 3 CKT 1/4 Phone Plug. The tip of the plug connects to the dot contact, the ring to the dash contact, and the sleeve to the common contact.

Connection to the Transmitter:

A shielded cable is required to connect the HK5A to the transmitter. An RCA Phono Plug should be installed on one end of this cable, and a connector compatible with the transmitter's key jack on the other end.

  • For transmitters with grid block keying, connect the RCA Phono Connector to the grid jack on the back of the HK5A.
  • For cathode or solid-state keyed transmitters, connect to the direct jack on the HK5A. Users should consult their transmitter operation manual for specific keying requirements.

Hand Key Jack:

The hand key jack accepts a standard 2CKT 1/4 inch phone plug (not provided). This allows for manual operation of the transmitter while still utilizing the HK5A's sidetone monitor feature. The HK5A can also function as a code practice oscillator in this mode.

Iambic or Squeeze Operation:

Iambic or squeeze keying allows the keyer to send alternate dots and dashes when both keyer paddles are pressed simultaneously. This technique can be used for seven specific letters (C, F, K, L, Q, R, and Y), enabling them to be sent with a single "squeeze" rather than keying each element separately. While it requires practice to master, it results in smooth and effortless keying. For example, to send the letter C, both paddles are squeezed simultaneously, leading with the dash paddle. For the letter Q, the dash paddle is held closed, and the dot is inserted at the appropriate time, with the dash paddle remaining closed until the character is complete. Learning this technique is easier at slower speeds and gradually increasing speed with persistence.

Maintenance and Troubleshooting:

Battery Installation:

To install batteries, remove the top cover by unscrewing two screws on the rear lip, then slide the lid back to expose the battery holder. Install 4 C cells, ensuring correct polarity, and then reinstall the top cover.

Erratic Keying:

Erratic keying can be caused by two main issues:

  1. Dirty Key Contacts: This typically manifests as missing dots or dashes. Regular cleaning of the contacts with a commercial contact cleaner should resolve this.
  2. RF Interference: If the HK5A keys normally when the transmitter is off or at reduced power but becomes erratic at maximum RF output, RF interference is the likely cause. Several solutions are suggested:
    • Connect a ground wire between the metal cabinet of the HK5A and the transmitter. The station transmitter should always be connected to a good earth ground.
    • Use shielded cable to connect the HK5A to both the key and the transmitter's keying output.
    • Position the HK5A as far away as possible from sources of RF, such as the transmitter, antenna tuners, and any non-coaxial antenna leads.
    • In severe RF problem cases, installing ferrite beads on each lead leaving the HK5A may be necessary. This involves unsoldering leads from the jacks, threading several beads over each lead, and then resoldering them. Ferrite beads are available from various sources.
