Overview

The Hanna HI98501 Checktemp® is a high-accuracy digital thermometer designed for professional use, offering precise temperature measurements across a wide range. This instrument is ideal for applications requiring reliable temperature monitoring, such as in food safety, laboratories, and industrial settings. Its robust design and user-friendly features make it a versatile tool for various environments.

Function Description

The Checktemp® is a digital thermometer that provides accurate temperature readings in both Celsius and Fahrenheit. It features a stainless steel probe that houses the temperature sensor at its tip, ensuring quick and precise measurements. A key feature of this device is its automatic CalCheck® function, which verifies the thermometer's accuracy upon startup. This self-diagnostic capability ensures that the instrument is always operating within its specified tolerances, providing users with confidence in their measurements. If the CalCheck® indicates an issue, it will display an error message, alerting the user to potential inaccuracies. The device is designed for continuous use, with a long battery life that supports extended operation. It also includes an auto-off feature to conserve battery power, which can be configured by the user.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Range: The thermometer measures temperatures from -50.0 to 150.0 °C (-58.0 to 302 °F). This broad range makes it suitable for a variety of applications, from very cold to moderately hot environments.
  • Resolution: It offers a resolution of 0.1 °C for measurements between -50.0 and 150.0 °C, and 0.1 °F for measurements between -58.0 and 199.9 °F. For temperatures above 200 °F, the resolution is 1 °F. This fine resolution allows for detailed temperature monitoring.
  • Accuracy: The Checktemp® boasts high accuracy, with a tolerance of ±0.2 °C for temperatures between -30.0 and 120.0 °C. Outside this range (from -50.0 to -30.0 °C and 120.0 to 150.0 °C), the accuracy is ±0.3 °C. In Fahrenheit, accuracy is ±0.5 °F for -22.0 to 199.9 °F, and ±1 °F for -58.0 to -22.0 °F and 200 to 302 °F. This level of accuracy is crucial for critical applications where precise temperature control is necessary.
  • Environment: The device is designed to operate in environments ranging from -30 to 50 °C (-22 to 122 °F).
  • Battery Type: It uses a single CR2032 battery.
  • Battery Life: The battery provides approximately 2000 hours of continuous use, ensuring long-term operation before replacement is needed.
  • Auto Off: The auto-off feature can be set to 8 minutes (default), 60 minutes, or completely turned OFF, allowing users to customize power saving.
  • Dimensions: The thermometer measures 50 x 185 x 21 mm (2 x 7.3 x 0.9″), making it compact and easy to handle.
  • Weight: It weighs 50 g (1.8 oz.), contributing to its portability.
  • Certification: The HI98501 is certified to EN 13485:2001 standards for suitability (storage), environment (E), and accuracy class (0.5). It also carries an IP65 rating, indicating protection against dust and low-pressure water jets.

Usage Features

The Checktemp® is designed for straightforward operation. To turn the device ON, simply press the ON/OFF button. Upon activation, all LCD segments are displayed for one second, followed by the automatic CalCheck® process. A "CAL" and "-0-" message indicates that the thermometer is within specifications and ready for use. When taking measurements, it's important to ensure that the tip of the stainless steel probe, where the sensor is located, is immersed in the substance being measured. Users should wait a few seconds for the display to stabilize to get an accurate reading. The recommended immersion level for the probe is 4 cm (1.5 inches).

The device offers customizable settings for temperature units and auto-off time. To access the Setup MODE, the user needs to press the SET button located inside the battery compartment. A single press allows for changing the temperature unit between °C and °F using the ON/OFF button. A second press of the SET button allows for adjusting the auto-off time, cycling through 8 minutes (default), 60 minutes, or OFF ("d--"). This flexibility allows users to tailor the thermometer's behavior to their specific needs.

Maintenance Features

Battery replacement is a simple process. The battery symbol on the display will blink when the battery is low, or the device may not switch on. To replace the battery, the user needs to open the battery compartment, ensure the correct polarity, and insert a new CR2032 battery. It is crucial to replace the battery in a safe area and dispose of old batteries according to local regulations. If the meter has been submerged in liquid, it must be completely dried before replacing the battery.

The Checktemp® comes with a one-year warranty covering defects in workmanship and materials, provided it is used for its intended purpose and maintained according to instructions. This warranty covers repair or replacement free of charge. However, damage due to accidents, misuse, tampering, or lack of prescribed maintenance is not covered. For service or warranty claims, users should contact their local Hanna Instruments Office, providing the model number, purchase date, serial number, and a description of the problem. If the instrument needs to be returned for service, a Returned Goods Authorization number should be obtained from the Technical Service department, and the instrument should be properly packed for shipping.

Troubleshooting information is provided to help users address common issues. Error messages like "CAL" and "Err" indicate an internal error, suggesting the Checktemp® may not be within specifications. A "---" display means the temperature is out of range or the probe connection is broken. Other error codes like "Err" (calibration data read error), "Er1" (unexpected device reset), and "Er2" (internal temperature measurement malfunction) are also explained. In many cases, these errors can be resolved by turning the Checktemp® OFF and then ON to reset the device. If the error persists, users are advised to contact their local Hanna Instruments Office.

Users are reminded to ensure that the product is suitable for their specific application and environment. Any user-introduced modifications may degrade performance. To prevent damage or burns, the meter should not be placed in a microwave oven. For safety, the meter should not be used or stored in hazardous environments.
