Overview

The document describes the HARD Home Care Springfield Crib, a hospital-grade crib designed for home use. It is manufactured by HARD Manufacturing, identified as the "#1 manufacturer of hospital cribs." The manual, revised on June 12, 2020 (version 2020.1), provides caregiver information and assembly instructions for models H1943-CGP, H1955-KGP, and H1975-MGP. The product is FDA approved, ISO 13485:2016 certified, and made in the USA, with SGS certification.

Function Description

The HARD Home Care Springfield Crib is a specialized bed designed for patients requiring a secure and adjustable sleeping environment in a home care setting. Its primary function is to provide a safe and comfortable space, particularly for individuals who might be at risk of falling from a standard bed or require specific positioning. The crib features adjustable head and foot sections, side rails for containment, and optional vinyl curtains for additional safety or privacy. The design emphasizes patient safety, ease of operation for caregivers, and durability.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Weight Limit: The cribs and beds have a weight limit of 150 lbs. Exceeding this limit can damage components and compromise safety.
  • Mattress: Custom-sized mattresses are provided by Hard Manufacturing to prevent entrapment hazards and ensure proper fit and operation. Using mattresses from other manufacturers is explicitly discouraged.
  • Head Section Articulation: The head section can be elevated to approximately 35 degrees, requiring 16-17 turns of the head crank handle.
  • Foot/Knee Section Articulation: The foot/knee section can be elevated to approximately 15 degrees, requiring 7 turns of the foot crank handle.
  • Electrical Components Warranty: Motors, staff controls, and under-bed control boxes are warranted for two years.
  • Expected Service Life: The expected service life for HARD Manufacturing Cribs or Beds is 9 years.
  • Equipment Classification:
    • Class 1 equipment
    • Type B equipment
    • IPX4 ingress of water (ordinary equipment)
    • Equipment not suitable for use in the presence of flammable anesthetic mixture with air or oxygen or nitrous oxide.
    • Mode of operations continuous with intermittent loading.
  • Weight Limits (Symbolic): Symbols indicate weight limits of 68.9 kg and 81.8 kg, likely referring to different configurations or components.

Usage Features

  • Side Rail Operation: The side rails are raised and lowered using a "Johns Hopkins Handle" with a "trigger" mechanism. Caregivers must lift the handle, then squeeze it to lower the rail. The red tips of the triggers must be securely seated in the slide rod notches when the rail is up, and should barely be visible. It is crucial to tug the rail to ensure it is firmly in place. To prolong the life of the trigger assembly, caregivers should continue squeezing the trigger mechanism while lowering the rail until it reaches the desired height, rather than releasing it prematurely.
  • Lift Bar Operation (for Vinyl Curtains): For cribs equipped with vinyl curtains, lift bars are used. These are raised with two fingertip releases on each side. Similar to side rails, the red tips of the trigger mechanisms must securely lock into the notches on the slide rods, producing an audible click. The lift bar should not move when tugged if correctly latched.
  • Crank Handle Usage:
    • Head Crank Handle: Located on the left side of the foot end. It should be pulled out for use and tucked in when not in use to prevent damage. Turning clockwise elevates the head section. Caregivers are warned not to continue cranking once the maximum articulation (35 degrees) is reached, as this will only stress components and cause breakage.
    • Foot Crank Handle: Located on the right side of the foot end. Similar to the head crank, it should be pulled out for use and tucked in when not in use. Turning clockwise elevates the foot/knee section. Caregivers are warned not to continue cranking once the maximum articulation (15 degrees) is reached, as this will only stress components and cause breakage.
  • Caregiver Safety Information:
    • Never leave the patient unattended when side rails are lowered or when the head is elevated if there is a risk of falling.
    • The crib has a weight limit of 150 lbs; caregivers should not get into the bed with the patient.
    • If any trigger mechanism (side rail or lift bar) fails to lock properly, the crib should be removed from service, and the durable medical equipment provider should be contacted for service.
    • All bolts and fasteners must be securely tightened and maintained.
    • Before each use or assembly, inspect the crib for damaged hardware, loose joints, missing parts, or sharp edges.
  • Assembly Instructions: The crib comes in multiple boxes (mattress, mattress platform, crib ends, side rails, slide rods, hardware, and optional IV pole/under-crib shelf). Assembly involves:
    1. Attaching the mattress platform to the end assemblies by anchoring it into corner locks and tapping with a rubber mallet to firmly seat it.
    2. Inserting slide rods into side rails, ensuring the Johns Hopkins handles are facing outwards, and locking them into the top position.
    3. Threading the side curtain lift bar onto the slide rods (if applicable), sliding fabric loops, and placing the top curtain rod to rest on stop rings.
    4. Adding plastic spacers, nylon washers, bumper springs, and a second nylon washer to the bottom of the slide rods, then placing the side assemblies onto the lower crib eyes.
    5. Positioning the top of the slide rods and side assembly into the upper crib eye, adding screws and washers (not fully fastened yet).
    6. Aligning and fastening the slide rod lug with the end assembly lug using a screw and washer on the outside, and a lockwasher and acorn nut on the inside.
    7. Raising and lowering the side rail several times to align slide rods, then fully fastening the screws and washers at the top of the slide rods.
    8. Adding the mattress.

Maintenance Features

  • Cleaning: HARD Manufacturing cribs and beds can be cleaned with an anti-bacterial all-purpose cleaner. It must be non-abrasive, and anything containing bleach, alcohol, or ammonia must be avoided. The crib should be dried thoroughly with a soft cloth immediately after cleaning; it should never be allowed to air dry, as this can lead to premature rust and corrosion.
  • Mattress and Bumper Pad Inspection: Mattresses and heavy-duty bumper pads should be checked regularly and replaced if there are any tears in the fabric.
  • Parts Support: HARD Manufacturing supports parts for cribs and beds for up to 12 years from the date of manufacture, as long as the part is still made or obtainable from vendors.
  • Warranty:
    • Five (5) year warranty: Covers non-expendable components (head/foot end assemblies, side assemblies, mattress platform) for defects in materials or workmanship.
    • One (1) year warranty: Covers expendable components (mattresses, trigger assemblies, slide rods, crank handles, Johns Hopkins handles, vinyl curtains, curtain rods, IV components) for defects in materials or workmanship.
    • Two (2) year warranty: Covers electrical components (motor, staff control, under-bed control box) for defects.
    • Warranty Conditions: The warranty covers normal use and is voided by abuse, misuse, mishandling, excessive wear, or modifications to the equipment (including electrical components).
    • Replacement: Contingent on providing serial numbers (crib, bed, mattress, defective part), photos of defective/damaged parts, and returning the item for inspection if requested.
  • Motor Overheating Prevention: To prevent overheating, a 15-minute break is required after raising and lowering the bed three full times in succession.
  • Return Policy: Acceptance of returns for new and unused equipment/parts is at HARD Manufacturing's discretion, and the purchaser is responsible for a restocking fee and freight costs.
  • Disinfection: Placing cribs and youth beds in cart washers or using steam spray guns for disinfecting is not recommended. A mild detergent and thorough drying are advised. Solvents containing alcohol, ammonia, or other abrasives should be avoided to prevent premature corrosion.
