Overview

This document is an instruction manual for Hitachi refrigerators, covering models HRTN5230M, HRTN5255M, HRTN5255MF, and HRTN5275MF. It provides comprehensive information on preparation for use, operation, and maintenance.

Function Description

The Hitachi refrigerator is designed for household use, offering various compartments for optimal food storage and preservation. Key functions include:

  • Refrigeration and Freezing: Maintains specific temperature ranges for different food types. The freezer compartment typically operates between -20°C and -18°C, while the refrigerator compartment maintains 1°C to 5°C.
  • Ice Making: Features either a standard ice tray (for HRTN5230M) or a "Twist Ice Maker" (for HRTN5255M, HRTN5275M, HRTN5255MF, HRTN5275MF) for convenient ice cube production.
  • Temperature Control: Automatic temperature control with adjustable dials for both freezer and refrigerator compartments. Users can select settings like "Cold," "Normal," or "Coldest" based on their needs.
  • Fresh Select Compartment (HRTN5255MF, HRTN5275MF): A dedicated drawer that can be adjusted to store fruits, vegetables, dairy, or meat, with a temperature range of -1°C to 7°C depending on the lever setting.
  • Door Alarm: An audible alarm system that notifies the user if a door is left open for more than 1 minute, with escalating beeps for longer durations.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Refrigerant: Uses R600a refrigerant.
  • Blowing Agent: Cyclopentane is used for the urethane heat insulation.
  • Operating Temperature Range: Designed to operate efficiently in room temperatures between 10°C and 43°C.
  • Ventilation Space: Requires specific clearances for proper air circulation: at least 30 cm over the top, 10 cm at the rear, and 5 cm at both sides.
  • Power Supply: Must be connected to an exclusive wall power outlet with the rated voltage.
  • Door Opening Angle: Doors can open approximately 130 degrees.

Usage Features

Installation:

  • Location: Install on a rigid, level floor, away from direct sunlight or heat sources, in a dry, well-ventilated area.
  • Leveling: Adjust the leveling legs to ensure the refrigerator stands horizontally and prevents abnormal vibrations or noises.
  • Grounding: Always ground the refrigerator to prevent electric shock and noise interference, especially in humid conditions.
  • Initial Setup: After transport, allow the refrigerator to stand upright for over an hour before plugging it in. Clean the interior gently with a soft cloth. Allow sufficient time (4-24 hours) for cooling before storing food.

Optimal Food Storage:

  • Airflow: Maintain space between food items to ensure proper cold air circulation. Avoid blocking the cold air vent.
  • Food Preparation: Cool warm food before placing it in the refrigerator to prevent temperature rise and energy waste.
  • Protection: Use plastic wrap or sealed containers to prevent food from drying out and to avoid odor transfer.
  • Raw Food Storage: Store raw meat and fish in suitable containers to prevent contact with other foods.

Temperature Control:

  • Freezer: "Cold" for general storage, "Normal" for everyday use, "Coldest" for rapid ice making or when surrounding temperature is high. Remember to return to "Normal" after using "Coldest" for extended periods to prevent food from freezing excessively.
  • Refrigerator: "Cold" for less cooling, "Normal" for everyday use, "Coldest" for more rapid or colder cooling.
  • Recommendations: Specific settings are recommended for heavy usage, winter conditions (below 15°C), and vacation periods to optimize efficiency.

Ice Making:

  • Standard Tray (HRTN5230M): Fill 3/4 to 4/5 full to allow for water expansion during freezing. Twist both ends of the tray to remove cubes.
  • Twist Ice Maker (HRTN5255M, HRTN5275M, HRTN5255MF, HRTN5275MF): Pour water up to the full line. Once ice is made, turn the lever to drop ice into the "Ice Bank." Do not twist the ice maker with the frame or use the "Ice Bank" as an ice maker tray.

Fresh Select Compartment (HRTN5255MF, HRTN5275MF):

  • Adjustable Lever: A lever allows adjustment of cold air flow to provide different temperature ranges: 3°C-7°C for "Vegetable & Fruit" and -1°C-3°C for "Meat & Dairy."
  • Caution: Be mindful of moisture content in food to prevent freezing. Ensure the chilled case is properly closed to avoid damage.

Shelves and Pockets:

  • Adjustable Shelves: Pull up the back and pull out the shelf forward to adjust positions.
  • Egg Pocket: Designed to hold 12 eggs, with a rear side for smaller pockets. If room temperature is too low, move the egg tray to a lower pocket to prevent freezing.
  • Shelf Trims: Removable. Hold shelves with both hands when handling to prevent injury.

Maintenance Features

Care and Maintenance (Monthly):

  • Cleaning Procedure:
    1. Unplug the refrigerator.
    2. Remove all food items.
    3. Wipe the interior with a soft cloth dampened with lukewarm water or diluted, pH-balanced washing liquid.
    4. Clean the door gasket thoroughly.
    5. Wipe off any remaining water droplets from parts.
    6. Return all parts to their original locations.
    7. Check and clean the power plug, cord, and outlet.
    8. Plug the power cord back in.
  • Compressor Restart Delay: After unplugging, the compressor will not run for 10 minutes, even if plugged back in immediately. It will restart after approximately 30 seconds if the inside is not cold.
  • Cautions:
    • Do not splash water on doors or the body to avoid electric shock, fire, or refrigerant leakage.
    • Avoid using polishing powder, soap powder, oil boiling water, brushes, acid, benzene, thinner, alcohol, or alkaline detergents, as these can damage surfaces or crack plastic parts.
    • Wipe off cooking oil smears immediately to prevent plastic parts from cracking.

Troubleshooting: The manual provides a detailed troubleshooting guide for common issues:

  • Refrigerator not cold enough: Checks include proper plugging, temperature settings, direct sunlight exposure, food placement, and door opening frequency.
  • Dew/Frost generation: Explains that dew/frost is a natural phenomenon when warm, humid air contacts cold surfaces. Solutions include ensuring doors are properly closed, not opening doors too frequently or for too long, and wiping off dew/frost with a dry cloth.
  • Abnormal noises/vibrations: Checks for proper installation, levelness, and contact with walls.
  • Operation sound: Explains that the compressor sound is normal, and it may run at a higher speed when the temperature is high or doors are opened frequently.

Dew or Frost Generation:

  • Causes: Occurs when warm, humid air enters the refrigerator and contacts cold inner walls or components.
  • Solutions: Ensure door gaskets are sealed, avoid frequent or prolonged door openings, and wipe off any accumulated dew or frost. For the freezer, check for food packaging obstructing the door seal. For the refrigerator, avoid storing excessive amounts of water-containing vegetables without wrapping.

Service Center:

  • Contact Information: Provides the service center details for Arcelik Hitachi Home Appliances Sale (Singapore) Pte. Ltd., including a telephone number (62787177).
  • Maintenance Work: Emphasizes that maintenance work must only be carried out by well-trained maintenance personnel at a workshop.
  • Lamp Replacement: If lamps (LED) require replacement, contact the dealer or Hitachi Service Center.

Disposal:

  • Refrigerant and Insulation: Notes the use of R600a refrigerant and cyclopentane for insulation, which are environmentally friendly but require special disposal.
  • Disposal Instructions: Follow regional instructions for discarding. Remove door gaskets to prevent children from being trapped inside. Electrical and electronic products should not be disposed of with general household waste but must be treated at a specialized treatment facility for recycling.
