Overview

The Hogtunes G4 SG KIT-RM is a high-performance front speaker kit with a 225-watt amplifier, designed for 2014+ "Rushmore" FLH models of Harley-Davidson motorcycles. This kit aims to enhance the audio experience for riders, offering significant improvements in volume and sound quality over factory systems.

Function Description:

The primary function of the G4 SG KIT-RM is to upgrade the motorcycle's front audio system. It includes two 462F-RM front speakers and a REV 225-RM amplifier. The speakers are 4th generation 6.5-inch, 2-ohm units, designed to deliver clear and powerful sound. The REV 225-RM amplifier is a Class D design, providing 112.5 watts per channel at 2 ohms. It features proprietary R.E.M.I.T. (Reduced Electro Magnetic Interference Technology) circuitry, which Hogtunes claims offers the best FM reception available for a Class D amplifier on a motorcycle, despite the inherent reduction in FM reception common with all Class D amplifiers. The system is designed to be expandable, allowing for the addition of a second or even a third REV 225-RM amplifier to power speakers in saddlebag lids, lower fairings, or rear speaker pods on Tour Paks.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Speakers: Model 462F-RM, 4th Gen, 6.5-inch, 2 Ohm, Front Speaker.
  • Amplifier: Model REV 225-RM, Class D design.
  • Amplifier Power Output: 112.5 watts per channel @ 2 ohms.
  • Voltage Protection: The amplifier has a built-in feature that turns itself off if the voltage drops below 10.5 volts, protecting the bike's electrical system and battery. It will reactivate once the voltage exceeds this threshold.
  • Compatibility: Specifically designed for 2014+ "Rushmore" FLH models.
  • FM Reception: Features R.E.M.I.T. technology to mitigate FM reception reduction, but users are advised that all Class D amplifiers will cause some reduction. Adding more amplifiers will further increase this reduction.
  • Antenna Recommendation: Hogtunes strongly advises against using in-fairing antennas if FM reception is important, recommending the factory antenna for optimal performance.

Usage Features:

  • Enhanced Audio: Provides a noticeable improvement in volume and sound quality compared to the stock system.
  • Expandability: The system is designed for easy upgrades. A second REV 225-RM amplifier can be added to power additional speakers (e.g., saddlebag lids, lower fairings, rear speaker pods). A third amplifier can also be integrated for even greater power, though it may require the removal of a CB module if present and specific mounting hardware (Hogtunes FLH Side plate-RM, Drag Specialties Part #4405-0521).
  • Speaker Grills: The new speakers can be used with the factory cloth-covered grills, but will play louder with the supplied metal mesh grills installed.
  • Audio Source Flexibility: The manual notes that using a USB cord for music devices generally provides better sound quality and louder playback than Bluetooth streaming. It also advises using good quality music files for the best audio experience.
  • Software Updates: Users are encouraged to keep their radio's software up to date via downloads from the "Motor Company's" website, as earlier software versions could cause aftermarket amplifiers to distort prematurely.
  • Sound Adjustment: The system's sound may differ when the bike is running versus not running, requiring potential adjustments to bass and treble controls.

Maintenance Features:

  • Installation Process: The installation is broken down into three steps:
    1. Changing Out the Front Speakers: Involves removing the seat, battery wires, outer fairing/headlamp assembly, and speaker cabinets. The factory speakers are replaced with the Hogtunes 462F-RM speakers, ensuring they are flush with the cabinet for optimal bass response.
    2. Installation of the Amplifier: Requires removing the black plate over the radio, relocating the GPS antenna (if present), and securing the amplifier's mounting plate. The input and output harnesses are then connected to the amplifier and the bike's existing wiring.
    3. Routing the Power Harness: Involves plugging the main power harness into the amplifier, routing it under the inner fairing and tank console, and securing it with zip ties to the bike's factory harness. The power and ground wires are then connected to the battery terminals.
  • Wiring Security: Emphasizes the importance of securing all wires and ensuring they do not bind or impede the motorcycle's steering, which could lead to serious injury or death.
  • FM Reception Optimization: Advises against attaching any amplifier wiring to factory antenna wires to prevent interference and maintain the best possible FM reception.
  • Battery Protection: The amplifier's auto-shutoff feature at 10.5 volts helps protect the battery, especially when listening to the stereo without the engine running. If the amp shuts off while riding, it could indicate a potential issue with the charging system.

Warranty Information:

Hogtunes speakers are warranted for a period of 20 years. The REV 225-RM amplifier is warranted for 3 years from the original purchase date. Proof of purchase is required for all warranty claims. The warranty applies to the original retail customer and is not transferable. Products found to be defective during the warranty period will be repaired or replaced (with a product deemed to be equivalent) at Hogtunes sole discretion.
