Chapter 4
DRIVING
This system has a ve-speed electronically
controlled automatic transmission. Its
shift indicators are arranged with P (park)
at one end, followed in sequence by R
(reverse), N (neutral) and then the forward
driving ranges.
To prevent the vehicle from ‘creeping’ you
should always have your foot on the brake
pedal when shifting out of P or N.
P (Park)
This stops the front wheels from rotating and should be selected (together
with the park brake) when leaving the vehicle. Never select P until your vehicle
is fully stopped. The P position is one of only two positions (the other is N) in
which your engine may be started.
Note The vehicle is equipped with Brake Transmission Shift Interlock (BTSI).
To move the transmission gear selector lever out of position P (park), have the
ignition switched on and depress the brake pedal. If the vehicle’s battery is at,
refer to Transmission shift lock control system in chapter 6.
R (Reverse)
Never select R until your vehicle is fully stopped. The reversing lamps
operate when R is selected and the ignition is on. After reversing, ensure the
vehicle has fully stopped before selecting a forward gear.
N (Neutral)
This is the out-of-gear position. You may restart a stalled engine while
the vehicle is still moving or stopped.
D (Drive)
This is the normal forward driving position and allows the transmission
to choose the appropriate gear (1st through to 5th) for the driving conditions
and optimum fuel economy.
Fifth
gear is overdrive which reduces engine speed and noise levels while
increasing fuel economy.
Shifting between gear positions
Movement between certain gear positions requires pressing the release button on the
front of the selector grip.
When the ignition is on, depress the brake pedal and press the release button on the
front of the selector grip as indicated by the black/or white arrows as follows:
Y
ou must apply the brake pedal and press the release button on the selector
grip to shift.
Y
ou must press the release button on the selector grip to shift.
It is not necessary to apply the brake pedal or press the release button on the
selector grip to shift.
WARNING
You can select some transmission positions without pressing the button on the
selector grip. However, it is recommended that you become familiar with these
positions to prevent any accident or damage to your transmission that may occur
due to incorrect operation.
