Chapter 5
FUEL
Your vehicle is tted with emission control systems which are designed to reduce the
amount of hydrocarbons (HC), carbon monoxide (CO), and oxides of nitrogen (NOx)
that are emitted from the engine and fuel system into the atmosphere. HC and NOx,
when exposed to sunlight under certain conditions can contribute to smog. In addition,
carbon monoxide is toxic when it becomes highly concentrated in the air.
The three major emission control systems tted to your vehicle are:
•
Evaporative emission control system
This
system is designed to prevent the escape of fuel vapour from the fuel system
and recycles it through the normal combustion process.
•
Crankcase emission control system
This
system is designed to prevent blow-by gases from escaping into the
atmosphere and recycles them through the combustion process.
•
Exhaust emission control system
The
various components of this system operate collectively to limit HC, CO and
NOx emissions in the exhaust gas. The exhaust emission control system is
comprised of components including electronic control of spark, fuel and idle speed.
In addition, Australian vehicles have a catalytic converter and closed loop mixture
control system.
Owner responsibility
Vehicles sold and serviced within Australia have been designed to comply with
Australian Design Rules and State Regulation emission requirements.
The engine control system or the exhaust system of the vehicle must not be modied
in any way. Any change to the design may increase the emissions or otherwise defeat
the intent of the regulations.
WARNING
Any person who removes, modies or hinders any part of the emission control
system may be contravening Australian Design Rules, refer to A.D.R. 83/00
(External Noise) and A.D.R. 79/02 (Emission Control for Light Vehicles). It is also
illegal to drive a vehicle modied in this way.
First drive
When the vehicle is driven for the rst time, wax and oil on the exhaust system may
evaporate, producing smoke-like emissions that should not be inhaled. Allow wax and
oil to evaporate while the vehicle is in the open air.
MAINTENANCE REQUIREMENTS
To ensure continuing compliance with the regulations, you must have the vehicle
serviced at the frequency shown in the Maintenance schedule, in the Service/warranty
booklet. Your Holden Dealer will maintain the vehicle’s emission control system as per
the vehicle’s Service/warranty booklet.
It is recommended that the necessary servicing be performed by an authorised Holden
Dealer who has the specialised servicing equipment and trained personnel available to
ensure that the adjustments and services specied are carried out.
