Mobile phones and CB radios
Mobile phones and CB radio equipment, which use an integrated antenna, may
temporarily affect the vehicle’s electronics (permanent damage is unlikely) when used
inside the vehicle, due to the interference created when transmitting.
Therefore, mobile phones and CB radio equipment that use an antenna tted to the
outside of the vehicle, should be used whenever possible.
If phones or CB radios with an integrated antenna must be used inside the vehicle,
care should be taken not to operate near the dashboard area.
Driving on sealed roads
WARNING
Do not use 4WD for normal driving on sealed roads. It will cause unnecessary noise,
poor fuel consumption and stress 4WD components.
The increased traction of 4WD vehicles offers greater driving control in adverse road
conditions, particularly heavy snow and ice. However, four-wheel drive vehicles are not
skid-proof. It is usually easier to control a skid in a conventional vehicle than a four-
wheel drive vehicle, in the same circumstances.
When the conditions are severe enough to warrant engaging 4WD on sealed roads,
remember the following:
Drive slowly in the lower gears, according to the road and weather conditions.
Use the accelerator pedal to control the vehicle.
Keep the use of the brake pedal to a minimum.
Do not slip the clutch or spin the wheels.
Do not make excessive or jerky steering movements.
Off-road 4WD vehicles have a higher centre of gravity, so always approach curves
at an appropriate driving speed. Do not attempt to go as fast through turns as you
might in a conventional 2WD vehicle. Likewise, strong crosswinds can affect the
normal steering of the vehicle and could lead to loss of vehicle control. Drive slower
under strong crosswind conditions.
As with all driving, exercise caution when in slippery conditions (caused by sand,
gravel, water, snow or ice on the road) in order to maintain vehicle control.
When driving in snow or ice, select 4L or 4H (depending on the conditions); start
the vehicle moving with minimal engine revs, low gear and combined clutch and
accelerator control; do not slip the clutch excessively; change to a higher gear as
soon as possible, keeping the engine revolutions low to prevent wheel spin.
