Glow plug indicator light
The diesel engine has a special starting system. It has small heating elements called
glow plugs, which warm the engine for improved starting.
Turn the ignition switch to the
ON position. The glow plugs will start warming the engine.
The glow plug indicator light ! located on the instrument panel, will illuminate. Refer
to Warning/reminder indications in chapter 1A.
When the glow plugs have heated the engine enough for it to start (2 to 7 seconds
when the engine is cold), the glow plug indicator light ! will extinguish. The engine is
now ready to be started.
Starting the engine
1. Apply the park brake rmly and release
only after you have started the engine
and are ready to drive away.
2. Manual
3
: Depress the clutch pedal
fully in and move the gear shift lever
to the neutral position. The clutch
pedal can now be released.
Automatic
3
: Move the shift lever to
the P (park) or N (neutral) position.
The engine will not start if it is in any
other position. As a safety precaution,
you should have your foot on the brake
pedal in order to shift the transmission
shift lever out of the P (park) position.
Note The ignition switch cannot be
turned to OFF and the key cannot be
removed when the shift lever is out of
the P (park) position.
3. For cold or hot starting:
Do not touch the accelerator pedal. Simply turn the key to the START position and
release when the engine starts.
Note
After 20 seconds of engine cranking the starter will automatically disengage. When
this happens, wait for 30 seconds before trying again.
If the engine still fails to start, contact your Holden Dealer.
Turbo operating precaution, engine starting
Do not operate the engine above idle before normal engine oil pressure has been
established (such as applying full throttle immediately upon initial start-up). This causes
the turbocharger to operate at excessive speed before the bearings receive adequate
lubrication. Operation of the turbocharger for a period as short as ve seconds without
sufcient oil can cause bearing failure.
