TOWING A DISABLED VEHICLE
6-9
Chapter 6
EMERGENCIES
Hazard warning asher
Use the hazard warning asher to warn
other drivers any time your vehicle
becomes a trafc hazard, day or night.
Avoid stopping on the roadway if possible.
Switch the hazard warning asher on or
off by pressing the hazard warning switch,
which is located in the middle of the
dashboard. Both indicator symbols on the
instrument panel will ash simultaneously,
and all four external indicator/turn signal
lights will ash continuously.
The hazard warning asher will work with
the ignition switch in any position.
Towing your disabled vehicle
Proper lifting or towing equipment is necessary when lifting or towing the vehicle to
prevent damage during any towing operation. State and local laws must be followed.
In an emergency, your vehicle may be towed on all four wheels in the following manner:
Fit the towing equipment to the towing eye, which is located on the underside of the
left hand front subframe below the bumper. Do not attach any towing equipment to
the bumpers or brackets.
Place the automatic transmission
3
in N (neutral) position and release the park brake.
Place the manual transmission
3
transfer lever in neutral position. Refer to
Transmission operation in chapter 4 for shifting to neutral.
Turn the ignition key to the ON position. This will free the steering lock and allow
the correct operation of windscreen wipers and turn signals.
For the sake of safety and to prevent damage to the vehicle it is advisable to avoid
jerky movements and to drive slowly during towing operations.
Remember that power assist for brakes and power steering
3
will not be available
when the engine is off.
To prevent the entry of exhaust fumes from the towing vehicle into the passenger
compartment of your vehicle, close the windows and stop the entry of air by moving
the heating and ventilation controls to the recirculation D position.
Vehicles tted with automatic transmissions must not be towed for more than
55 kms or at over 30 km/h unless the propeller shaft is removed.
Vehicles with damaged transmissions must not be towed unless the propeller shaft
is removed.
Only the driver should be in the towed vehicle.
