ENGINE OVERHEATING
Chapter 6
EMERGENCIES
6-11
WARNING
Immediate action is required if the engine overheats. This may be indicated by the
temperature gauge needle moving to the red zone, due to steam escaping from under
the bonnet, a loss of power or a loud knocking or pinging noise.
Continued driving even for a short time could result in a re or vehicle damage.
Should the coolant temperature gauge needle move to the H position and remain there
for more than 30 seconds, pull over to the side of the road safely. Leave the engine
idling while you step out of the vehicle to check that the cooling fan is working.
WARNING
Do not open the bonnet if you can see or hear steam or coolant escaping from the
engine compartment. Wait until no steam or coolant can be seen or heard before
opening the bonnet.
If the fan is working and the temperature gauge needle has not returned to its normal
position within a few minutes, stop the engine and remove the ignition key.
Look for leaks at the radiator hoses and connections, heater hoses and connections,
radiator and water pump and fan belt. Take care when checking all of these areas as
they may still be hot.
If you nd a major leak or other problems that may have caused the engine to overheat,
do not run the engine until these problems have been corrected.
If you do not nd anything wrong then you should check the engine coolant level in the
coolant reservoir. Refer to Engine coolant in chapter 7 for the location.
WARNING
Do not remove the cooling system cap if the engine and radiator are still hot. Scalding
uid and steam can be blown out under pressure which could cause serious burns.
