ENGINE OVERHEATING cont.
Chapter 6
EMERGENCIES
6-12
WARNING
• The cooling system is pressurised, to avoid injury. Please read all of the following
instructions before attempting to add coolant.
• Do not spill coolant on the vehicle’s exterior surfaces as it can damage the paintwork.
If you do, wash it off immediately.
Without undoing the coolant reservoir
cap, look at the level of the coolant in the
see-through coolant reservoir.
When the engine is hot the level should
be above the MIN mark.
If the level is at or below the MIN mark
when the engine is hot, coolant will need
to be added as follows:
•
Allow the engine to cool a little.
• The bottle is pressurised, so cover
the cap with a thick cloth. Remove the
cap very slowly to allow any pressure
to escape.
•
If water is added it should be clean.
• Top up the coolant reservoir to the
MAX mark (while the engine is idling).
•
Replace the coolant reservoir cap.
If after taking one or more of the above actions the temperature gauge no longer
indicates an overheat condition you can resume driving at a reduced speed. Return
to normal driving after 10 minutes if the temperature gauge does not again show an
overheat condition. If overheating occurs again, have the vehicle checked as soon as
possible by your Holden Dealer.
The engine may temporarily operate at high temperatures during demanding operating
conditions, especially on hot days, including:
• Climbing a long hill.
• Stopping immediately after high speed driving.
• Idling for long periods in trafc.
• Towing a heavily laden trailer or caravan.
Note It may help to switch off the air conditioner in these conditions.
Refer to Engine coolant in chapter 7 to help protect your cooling system from
overheating.
