Chapter 7
WEEKLY CHECKS
7-9
UNDER BONNET CHECKS cont.
ENGINE COOLANT
Engine coolant level
The level of the coolant should be checked
weekly. This is simply a matter of looking
at the level in the plastic container, called
the coolant reservoir.
Check the level of the coolant and ll the
coolant reservoir as required. If the level
of the coolant in the reservoir is found
to be lower than the MIN line, check the
cooling system for leaks, then ll to bring
the level up to the MAX line.
WARNING
• Do not over ll the coolant reservoir.
• Always check the coolant level when the engine is cold.
To add coolant
WARNING
Do not spill coolant on the vehicle’s exterior surfaces as it can damage the paintwork.
If you do, wash it off immediately.
Ensure that the long life coolant in your vehicle conforms to Holden specications.
Refer to Specications in chapter 8.
If the coolant reservoir requires topping up, rst pre-mix a solution of 50% specied
coolant and 50% water.
Ensure the ignition is switched off.
Undo the cap on the top of the coolant reservoir, add the pre-mixed solution and secure
the cap.
Failure to use the coolant which meets Holden’s specication or maintaining the
specied concentration, may result in voiding your warranty.
In emergency situations, plain water may be used temporarily until the correct Holden
specied coolant is obtained (as soon as possible) from the nearest Holden Dealer.
The specied coolant works in three ways: it contains special corrosion inhibitors, it
helps the cooling system in hot weather by increasing the boiling point and it protects
against freezing down to -30 °C, provided the correct concentration is maintained.
If you regularly have to top up the cooling system, this may indicate that a problem
exists. Contact your Holden Dealer.
WARNING
Corrosion inhibitors and antifreeze uids are poisonous. Use extreme care when
handling. If swallowed seek medical attention.
Refer to Engine overheating in chapter 6 if the engine overheats.
