Continued driving EVEN FOR A
SHORT TIME could cause engine
damage. Stop the vehicle as soon
as it is safe to do so and perform
the cooling system checks.

DANGER
Do not open the bonnet if you can
see or hear steam or coolant
escaping from the engine
compartment. Scalding fluid and
steam can be blown out under
pre ssure, which could cause
serious burns. Wait until no steam
or coolant can be seen or heard
before opening the bonnet.

Do not remove the radiator c ap if
the engine and radiator are stil l
hot. Scalding fluid and steam can
be blown out under pressure,
which could cause serious burns.
Do not place hands near
under-bonnet components, as the
coo ling fa n may start working
unexpectedly even when the
engine is not running and the
ignition is switched off.
Cooling system checks
1. Leave the engine idling.
2. Ensure that the gear lever is in P
or neutral and apply the parking
brake.
3. Exit the vehicle and check t hat
the cooling fan is audibly
working.
If the fan is working and the engine
temperature gauge needle has not
returned to its normal position within
a few minutes:
1. Switch off the ignition and
remove the key.
2. Look for leaks at the radiator
hoses and connections, heater
hoses and connections, radiator
and water pump.

WARNING
Take care when checking these
areas as they may still be hot.
3. Check the air intake area in the
front bumper to ensure that it is
clear. See Air intake under
Exterior Care on page 10‑ 66.
4. If you do not find anything
wrong, check the engine coolant
level. See Engine Coolant on
page 10‑8.
5. DO NOT run the engine until any
problems have been corrected.
