The landing Craft, Vehicle, Personnel (lCVP) or Higgins Boat was one of the most vital pieces
of Allied naval equipment of the Second World War. It was important both numerically and due
to the contribution it made in each of the Allied amphibious landings it participated in. More
than 20,000 were manufactured by Higgins industries ond various licensees. Based upon a design for boats
intended to operate in marshy and swampy oreas, common,in louisiana where Higgins were bosed, the
design had a shallow draught and is thought to have come from ideas for an alcohol smuggling boat durin!)
the prohibition era. Presented to the Marines the boat soon found a new use. Early versions of the Higgins
boat did not feature a ful~width ramp and so were unable to carry a smoll vehicle such as a Jeep and tha.meR "

the bow the Higgins was tronsformed, it was now able to land, disembark its men or vehicle and depart from
the beach all within 3-4 minutes, greatly improving its chances of survival ond allowing the beach to be
resupplied and reinforced much more quickly. The boats were used extenSively both during D-day and in the
Pacific. After the war the Higgins boat faded from view, and now just a few examples of this remarkable and

Dos landing Craft, Vehicle, Personnel (lCVP), auch ols Higgins·Boot bekannt geworden, war
als landungsschiff sicherHch eines der entscheidendsten Kriegsgeriite der Alliierten im lweiten
Weltkrieg. Es war sowohl hinsichtlich der lahl der eingesetzten Boote als auch.aufgrund seines
bedeutenden Beitrags bei omphibischen landungen der Alliierten von hoher Wichtigkeit. Uber 20.000 dieser
Fahrzeuge wurden von Higgins Industries und verschiedenen Uzenznehmern hergestellt. Urspriinglich beruhte
das l(VP auf einer Konstruktion fOrBoote, die in sumpfigen, morostigen Bereichen eingesetzt werden sollten.
Solche Gebiete waren verbreitet in louisiona zu finden, wo Higgins seinen Betrieb fOhrte. Schiffe dieser
Art waren fioch und hotten nur geringen Tiefgang. Sie waren ouf der Form von Booten basiert, wie sie
wahrscheinlich wiihrend der Prohibition in den USAzum Schmuggeln von Alkohol verwendet wurden. AisBoote
dieser Art der Marineinfonterie vorgefOhrt wurden, wurde ihr Potenzial schnell erkannt. Fruhe AusfOhrungen
des Higgins·Boots wiesen noch keine in voller Bootsbreile ausgelegte Bugrampe auf. Domit konnten also noch.
keine kleineren Fohrzeuge wie elwa ein Jeep befordert werden; die Besatzungen wie ouch ihre AusrOstung
mussten Ober die Seitenwiinde das Schiff verlossen. Die grundlegende Idee fOr eine Rampe in voller Breite
slammte von einer Konstruktion der Japaner, die mil solchen Booten den Inselsloat Singopur angriffen. Mit
der HinzufOgung einer Rampe in voller Breite am Bug halte dos Higgins·Boot eine neue Dimension erhalten.
Es
konnte nun londen, seine Besatzung oder ein Fohrzeug ausbooten und wieder die Kusle verlassen - und
das alles in bloB drei oder vier Minulen. Die Soldaten hotten damit bedeutend hohere Oberiebenschoncen,
und die KOste konnte viel schneller mil Nochschub versorgt werden. Diese Boote wurden intensiv bei der
landung der Alliierten in der Normondie wie ouch im Pazifik verwendet. In der Nachkriegszeit verschwand
dos Higgins·Boot bald wieder. Heute existieren nur noch wenige dieser so wichtigen Kriegsfahrzeuge. Airfix

and dry thoroughly. Stir paints thoroughly before use.
