Printing with white ink: underflood, overflood, spot
Selecting which mode is used and the order the printer lays down the ink is determined by the
Media Profile selected in the RIP. This will be covered in more detail in chapters 4 and 5.
Most RGB and CMYK files are designed to print using a standard set of CMYK colors on white
media. Printing with white ink often requires additional steps at the RIP to add white ink data to the
print job or within the file itself, or both.
In overflood / underflood applications, the printheads are divided roughly in half to allow printing of
white under color (underflood) or white over color (overflood). Print speeds are just under half that of
6-color printing.
For spot applications, the full width of printheads are used and white is printed in-line with color.
This mode prints at the same speed as 6-color printing.
In the 6-color printhead configuration, the printheads move back and forth as media advances.
In the underflood printhead configuration, the.printheads are split to lay down white before
color ink. This reduces print speeds by approximately half that of the 6-color modes.
In the overflood printhead configuration, the printheads are split to lay down white after color
ink. This reduces print speeds by approximately half that of the 6-color modes.
