11.1 Glossary
BMC
Baseboard Management Controller
The BMC complies with the Intelligent Platform Management
Interface (IPMI) standard, responsible for collecting, processing,
and storing sensor signals, and monitoring the operating status
of the server components.
Ethernet A family of computer networking technologies commonly used
in local area networks (LANs), metropolitan area networks
(MANs), and wide area networks (WANs).
Ethernet uses Carrier Sense Multiple Access/Collision Detection
(CSMA/CD) and supports a data transfer rate of 10 Mbit/s on
multiple cables. The Ethernet
specication is the basis for the
IEEE 802.3 standard.
hot swap Replace or add components without stopping or shutting down
the system.
KVM keyboard, video, and mouse
A switch that provides a public video, keyboard and mouse for
the server.
P A unit of power. 1 P = 0.735 kW
panel The front-most element of a server, perpendicular to the PCB,
which serves to mount connectors and indicators, and also seals
the front of the chassis for airow and electromagnetic
compatibility (EMC).
