Appendix B. MAE Adapters Plugging Rules
Units assembled at the factory follow certain plugging rules, as described below,
use the same rules when installing adapters in the field.
Assumptions
Note: If required, to support APPN traffic one Token-Ring (FC 3280) adapter is
plugged in slot 1 (link to the 3746-9X0).
For the other slots the following rules applies (one more adapter is authorized when
the TR adapter is not plugged in slot 1):
No more than five of any combination of Token-Ring (FC 3280) and Ethernet
(FC 3281) adapters will be installed.
If a combination of
five
3280 and 3281 adapters are to be installed, no other
adapters will be installed.
If a combination of
four
3280 and 3281 adapters are to be installed, then one
additional adapter can also be installed.
A maximum of
four
ESCON adapters (3287) can be installed.
A maximum of
four
ISDN adapters (3283 or 3292) can be installed.
A maximum of
two
ATM adapters (3284 and 3293) can be installed.
Plugging Sequences
The following table illustrates how the slots are numbered: two rows of four slots,
numbered 1 through 8 (slot 1 is reserved):
These tables show the default sequence of installation for the various adapters.
LIC 280s and LIC 281s are installed left to right, beginning with slot 5. A maximum
of five may be installed in any single MAE.
