GmbH IWH-1.5E
Instantaneous Gas Water Heater
Installation and Operating Instructions (version 3.3)
The IWH-1.5E instantaneous water heater is designed according BS EN 1949:2011 +
A1:2013 “Specification for the installation of LPG systems for habitation purposes in leisure
accommodation vehicles and accommodation purposes in other vehicles”. This water heater
is not for use in space heating or marine application.
WARNING: If the information in these instructions is not followed exactly,
a fire or explosion may result causing property damage, personal injury or loss of life.
Do not store or use gasoline or other flammable vapors and liquids in the vicinity of this
or any other appliance. WHAT TO DO IF YOU SMELL GAS
Evacuate all persons from the vehicle.
Shut off the gas supply at the gas container or source.
Do not touch any electrical switch, or use any phone or radio in the vehicle.
Do not start the vehicle’s engine or electric generator.
Contact the nearest gas supplier or qualified service technician for repairs.
If you cannot reach a gas supplier or qualified service technician, contact the
nearest fire department
Do not turn on the gas supply until the gas leak(s) has been repaired.
Installation and service must be performed by a qualified installer, service
agency, OEM or the gas supplier.
If you want an additional safety, we recommend an additional extern tempering valve, which
restricts the water temperature to 50°C.
For most applications it is not necessary. Only if you slow down the water flow under 2l/min
very quick, the cold water has already temperatures over 20-25°C and you are not using any
mixing tab, the temperature might rise over 60°C for a short time (<1 min).
Critical Installation Warnings
Install in recreation vehicles only. RV’s are recreation vehicles designed as temporary
living quarters for recreation, camping, or travel use having their own power or towed by
another vehicle.
All combustion air must be supplied from outside the RV, and all products of combustion
must be vented to outside the RV.
DO NOT vent water heater with venting system serving another appliance.
DO NOT vent water heater to an outside enclosed porch area.
Protect building materials from flue gas exhaust.
Install water heater on an exterior wall, with access door opening to outdoors.
DO NOT modify water heater in any way.
DO NOT alter water heater for a positive grounding system.

Overview

The IWH-1.5E is an instantaneous gas water heater designed for use in recreation vehicles (RVs) as temporary living quarters for recreation, camping, or travel. It is compliant with BS EN 1949:2011 + A1:2013 standards for LPG systems in leisure accommodation vehicles. This water heater is not intended for space heating or marine applications.

Function Description

The IWH-1.5E operates by heating water on demand, meaning it does not store hot water in a tank. Water flow initiates the heating process; when the water flow exceeds 1.5 l/min, the burner automatically starts and heats the water to the desired temperature. The device is controlled by a remote panel, which allows users to select the desired water temperature. The heater is designed for 12 VDC power (10.5-15V, negative ground) and requires a "filtered" (pure DC) circuit. A breaking switch is recommended for safety to allow the water heater to be switched off separately. The system includes a µ-processor-based self-diagnostic system that displays error codes on the remote control's LED display in case of malfunction.

Usage Features

  • Temperature Control: Users can select their desired water temperature using the remote control's blue (colder) and red (warmer) buttons. The last selected temperature is stored in a nonvolatile memory, so it is retained even after power loss.
  • Automatic Operation: The heater remains in a dormant "stand-by mode" until a hot water tap is opened and a water flow of at least 2.5 l/min is detected. Once activated, the burner fires up within two seconds, and hot water flows from the tap.
  • Safety Features: The device includes several safety mechanisms. It will shut off if the water flow is too low (below 1.3 l/min) or if the hot water temperature exceeds 85°C. The remote control also has an ON/OFF button to continuously switch off the water heater, preventing accidental activation by water flow.
  • Gas Supply: The heater operates on LPG (Butane 28-30 mbar or Propane 30 mbar). It is crucial to ensure the gas supply is turned on at the tank and any manual gas valve in the system. After initial installation or changing gas bottles, it may require 3-5 trials for the gas to reach the burner and ignite.
  • Error Display: The remote control's LED display shows failure codes (e.g., E0 for no flame detection, E1 for pilot flame not lighting up) to assist in troubleshooting. Disconnecting the 12 VDC power for at least 2 minutes can reset the water heater.
  • Water Flow Adjustment: If the water temperature does not reach the desired level, users can reduce the water flow to quickly increase the outgoing water temperature.

Maintenance Features

  • Routine Inspections: It is recommended that the IWH-1.5E be inspected by a qualified service technician at least once a year. This includes checking air inlet openings and flue area for debris, heater mounting security, wiring for chafing, and the direct spark ignition, ground, and flame detection cables.
  • Combustion Check: Inspect for soot around the flue, which indicates incomplete combustion and requires attention from a qualified service technician.
  • Valve Checks: Regularly check the pressure relief valve and test the operation of the drain valve for proper function. The drain valve should never be opened during water heater operation.
  • Flame Inspection: Periodically turn on the power and a hot water faucet to observe the burner flame, which should have a normal bluish appearance indicating proper combustion.
  • Winterizing and Draining: To prevent damage from freezing, especially when traveling under freezing conditions or storing the RV for winter, the water system must be winterized. This involves turning off the water pump, power, and gas to the heater, then opening the drain valve (90° position) and at least one hot and cold water tap in the coach to drain the system. Compressed air (less than 2 bar) can be used to purge all water from the system. Alternatively, the system can be filled with RV non-toxic anti-freeze. The IWH-1.5E does not require a water heater bypass kit as it holds less than 0.3 liters of anti-freeze.
