active until drive program EorSis engaged.

Temporarily: Pull the right or left steering wheel
gearshiftpaddle (see “Steering wheel gearshift
paddles” later in thissection
). Manual drivepro-
gram Mistemporarily active. Depending on
whichgearshiftpaddle is pulled, the auto-
matic transmission immediately shifts into
the next geardown or up.
Whenmanual drive program Misactivated via
the steering wheel gearshiftpaddles, the tem-
porarily active manual drive program Mwillbe
deactivated automatically after alimited time, if
the driving situation permits. The automatic
transmission switches to the previously
activateddrive program EorS.When driving on
downhillgradients, the temporarilyactive
manualdrive programMwillonlybedeactivated
if the accelerator pedal is depressed while the
vehicleisrolling downhill.
Upshifting:
Pull the right-hand steering wheel gearshift
paddle (see
“Steeringwheel gearshiftpaddles” ear-
lier in thissection
). Theautomatic transmission
shifts up to the next gear.
In order to prevent engine damagethe auto-
matic transmission automaticallyshifts upif the
maximum engine speed on the currently
engaged gearisreached and youdepressthe
accelerator pedal.
Gearshiftrecommendation:
The gearshiftrecommendationsassist youin
adopting an economical driving style. The rec-
ommended gearisshown in the vehicle infor-
mation display.

Downshifiting:
Pull
the left-hand steering wheel

If youslow down or stop without shifting down,
theautomatic transmission automaticallyshifts
down.
Formaximum acceleration, pullthe left-hand
steering wheelgearshiftpaddle until the trans-
mission selects the optimum gearfor the cur-
rent speed.
If the engine exceeds the maximum engine
speed whenshifting down, the automatic trans-
mission protects against engine damagebynot
shifting down.
Kickdown:
Youcan also usekickdown formaximumaccel-
eration in manual drive program M
•
Depressthe accelerator pedalbeyond the pressure
pointThe transmission shifts to alower gear de-
pendingonthe engine speed.
•
Shift back up oncethe desired speed is reached.
During kickdown, youcannot shift gears using
thesteering wheel gearshiftpaddles.
If youapply fullthrottle, the automatic trans-
missionshiftsup to thenextgearwhenthemaxi-
mum enginespeed is reached.Thisprevents the
engine from overrevving.
Deactivating the temporarymanual drive

Pull and hold the right steering wheel gearshift
paddle until the automatictransmission shifts
