Maintenance

Overview

The Inland Craft DB-100 is a versatile band saw designed for various cutting applications, including diamond, wood, and metal. It is intended for indoor use and requires careful adherence to safety instructions for proper operation and to prevent serious personal injury.

Function Description

The DB-100 band saw is used for cutting a wide range of materials. Depending on the blade type installed, it can cut glass, semiprecious gemstones, ceramics, cement, marble, granite, coral, silicon, thin metals, hard plastics, other plastics, fiberglass, wood, and leather. The machine operates with a variable speed motor, allowing users to adjust the sawing speed to match the material being cut and the intricacy of the task. For diamond blades, a coolant system (typically water) is required to maintain cutting ability and blade life, while wood and metal blades can be used dry.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Model: DB-100
  • Blade Circumference: Designed for Inland-brand blades with a circumference of 37.7" (+ or - .005").
  • Speed: Variable speed, up to 3,400 rpm.
  • Fuse: 250V, 2AMP slo-blo cartridge fuse.
  • Power: Requires a grounded electrical outlet.
  • Chemical Warning: Contains nickel, which is known to the State of California to cause cancer (applies to the diamond band saw blade).

Usage Features

Setup and Installation: The manual provides detailed instructions for assembly, including installing the blade, adjusting blade tracking and alignment, setting blade tension, installing the work surface, and placing the BladeSert. The blade must be properly aligned and tensioned for optimal performance and blade life. For diamond blades, the coolant reservoir, drip guide, and drain tube must be installed. The drain tube directs dirty water into a collection container, preventing the reuse of contaminated water. An optional leather wiper can be installed to reduce overspray from the blade.

Blade Types and Applications: The DB-100 supports three types of band saw blades:

  • Diamond Band Saw Blade: Requires a coolant (water) and is suitable for cutting hard materials like glass, gemstones, ceramics, cement, marble, granite, coral, and silicon. The coolant flow rate should be about one drop every 4-5 seconds, increased only if dry powder forms on the material.
  • Wood and Metal Blades: Can be used dry. The teeth should point downward. The manual includes a comprehensive table listing materials and whether they can be cut wet or dry with specific blade types.

Operation:

  • Safety First: Always wear proper eye protection (safety goggles or glasses with side shields). Avoid loose clothing, gloves, neckties, or jewelry. Secure long hair.
  • Work Area: Ensure the work area is well-lit, clean, and uncluttered.
  • Unattended Operation: Do not operate unattended; adult supervision is required.
  • Substance Influence: Never operate under the influence of drugs, alcohol, or medication.
  • Cutting Technique: Apply light pressure and guide the material into the blade. Do not force the material, as this can bog down the saw and will not increase cutting speed. The blade should feel like it is pulling the material.
  • Speed Adjustment: Use the power knob to adjust sawing speed. Slower speeds are recommended for tighter cuts to maintain control and prevent twisting the blade. Running at full speed continuously adds stress to the blade without increasing cutting ability.
  • Cool-down Periods: To prevent overheating and deformation of the saw housing, it is recommended to cut for 30 minutes on, then allow 30 minutes off for the machine to cool down.
  • Material Considerations: Avoid sawing materials containing poisonous elements like uranium, mercury, lead, or arsenic. Always know the material being sawn. Never cut more than one workpiece at a time.

Maintenance Features

General Maintenance:

  • Disconnect Power: Always disconnect the machine from the power source before servicing, making adjustments, or when not in use.
  • Cleaning: Clean and dry the machine after each use. Rinse the interior of the saw housing with clean water and vacuum out wood and metal shavings. Rinse the work table with clean water to remove cutting residue.
  • Motor: The motor is sealed and requires no user maintenance. Do not open the motor housing.
  • Power Cord: Do not abuse the power cord; never carry the machine by the cord or yank it to disconnect. Keep the cord away from heat, oil, and sharp edges.

Specific Component Maintenance:

  • Upper Drive Wheel: Grease the upper wheel bearings with petroleum jelly every 5 hours of use to keep debris out of the needle bearings. This involves emptying the coolant reservoir (if wet sawing), tilting the saw backward at a 45° angle, and applying petroleum jelly to the bearing area.
  • BladeSert Blade Guide: The BladeSert wears over time, causing the blade slot to widen. Check the BladeSert for wear each time the saw is used and replace it when widening is observed. The "X" behind the split serves as a wear guide. It is good practice to use a new BladeSert with each new blade.
  • Drain Tube: Periodically remove and rinse the drain tube and the large stem with clean water to prevent clogs from cutting residue.
  • Leather Wiper: Reposition the leather wiper as it wears, following the installation instructions to ensure it brushes against the blade without pushing it out of its normal path.
  • Fuse Replacement: The DB-100 has a 250V, 2AMP slo-blo cartridge fuse in the back. Replacements can be found at local hardware stores. To change, push in with a flat head screwdriver and turn counter-clockwise.

Warranty Information: The DB-100 is covered by a 90-day warranty for salt-water use and a 1-year warranty for all other uses from the date of purchase. Warranty claims require proof of purchase or product registration. The warranty covers manufacturing defects but excludes problems from abuse, misuse, intentional damage, incorrect usage, lack of care, or failure to follow instructions. Consumable items like band saw blades and BladeSerts are not covered.
