Overview

The iPAD SP1 is an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) designed for public access and ease of use, making it a life-saving piece of medical equipment. It is a nominated device of the British Heart Foundation, emphasizing its reliability and suitability for emergency situations. The device is intended to be used by both trained and untrained individuals to provide immediate assistance to a casualty experiencing sudden cardiac arrest.

Function Description

The primary function of the iPAD SP1 is to analyze a casualty's heart rhythm and, if necessary, deliver an electrical shock to restore a normal heart rhythm. This process is guided by clear voice prompts and visual indicators, ensuring that users can confidently follow the necessary steps during a stressful emergency.

The device features a dual adult/child selection switch, allowing it to be adapted for different age groups without the need for separate electrode pads. When a child (aged between 1 and 8 years old) is the casualty, the switch can be set to child mode, and the same dual adult/child pads can be used. This simplifies the process and reduces the potential for error in an emergency.

Upon activation, the iPAD SP1 performs a self-check, displaying the status of the unit, the connection status of the electrode pads, their expiration date, and the battery life on its LCD screen. This ensures the device is always ready for use and provides critical information to the user.

The device provides continuous voice prompts that guide the user through the entire rescue process, from preparing the casualty to delivering a shock and performing CPR. These prompts are designed to be calm and clear, helping the user remain focused and follow instructions accurately.

After the pads are applied, the iPAD SP1 analyzes the casualty's heart rhythm. If a shock is advised, the device will announce this and prompt the user to press the flashing orange shock button. If no shock is advised, the device will indicate this and guide the user to begin CPR.

The iPAD SP1 also incorporates CPR guidance, providing voice prompts for chest compressions and breaths. The voice prompt is set to guide CPR at a ratio of 30 chest compressions to 2 breaths for 2 minutes. The device will advise the time remaining until the heart rhythm is re-analyzed, ensuring continuous care until medical help arrives.

Usage Features

The iPAD SP1 is designed for intuitive and straightforward use, even by individuals with minimal training.

Preparation and Setup:

  • Standard Pack Contents: The device comes with essential items, including the iPAD SP1 AED unit, a carry case, two sets of dual adult/child electrode pads, a battery pack, and two AED starter kits. The starter kits contain items like a CPR facial barrier, dry wipes, tough-cut scissors, gloves, and a gallant prep razor, all necessary for preparing the casualty.
  • Battery Installation: The battery pack is easily inserted into the device, with an arrow on the label guiding the direction. A click indicates secure installation.
  • Pad Connection: The dual adult/child electrode pads are pre-connected to the iPAD SP1, eliminating an extra step during an emergency.
  • Storage: One AED starter kit and a spare set of electrode pads are placed in the inside pocket of the carrying bag, while the additional starter kit and electrode pads are stored separately for replenishment. The iPAD SP1 itself is placed in the carrying bag, with the edge of the pads pulled through a dedicated pad slot in the case.
  • Visibility: The status LCD is visible through the carrying bag, allowing for regular checks of the device's readiness without needing to remove it from the case.
  • Accessibility: The iPAD SP1 AED should be placed in an easily accessible, secure location, in accordance with local requirements.

In-Use Operation:

  • Activation: The device is activated by pressing the green on/off button. This initiates the voice prompts and the self-check process.
  • Casualty Preparation: The AED starter kit is used to prepare the casualty. Voice prompts guide the user to remove all clothing from the chest and stomach, ripping clothing if necessary.
  • Pad Application: The pads packaging is torn open, and the pads are stuck to the casualty as illustrated on the pads themselves and by a visual indicator on the device. Voice prompts instruct the user to "Look closely at the picture on each pad," "Peel off the pad labelled ‘1' and stick to the bare skin of the patient," "Peel off the pad labelled ‘2' and stick to the bare skin of the patient," and "Press pads firmly to the skin of the patient."
  • Adult/Child Selection: The switch cover is lifted to set the adult/child selection switch to match the casualty. For children aged 1-8, the child mode is selected, and the same pads are used.
  • Heart Rhythm Analysis: The device lights up to ensure no one is touching the casualty before analyzing the heart rhythm. Voice prompts like "Do not touch the patient" and "Analysing heart rhythm" guide this step.
  • Shock Delivery: If a shock is advised, the device announces "shock advised, stand clear" and prompts the user to "press the orange button now" to "deliver shock now." A continuous beep and a flashing orange shock button indicate this phase.
  • CPR Guidance: If no shock is advised, or after a shock has been delivered, the device prompts the user to "begin CPR now" and "press the flashing blue i button for CPR voice prompt." The voice prompts guide the user through chest compressions and breaths, indicating the remaining time until re-analysis of the heart rhythm. This ensures continuous support until medical help arrives.

Maintenance Features

The iPAD SP1 is designed with maintenance in mind to ensure its readiness and longevity.

  • Warranty: The iPAD SP1 comes with a 7-year warranty as standard, covering defects in materials and workmanship. An extended warranty of up to 10 years is offered upon device registration within 3 months of purchase via www.members.ipad-aed.com. This extended warranty provides peace of mind and ensures long-term support for the device.
  • Fault Resolution: In case of a fault, users are advised to first contact their supplier. If the supplier cannot resolve the issue, the iPAD technical helpline (03333 444789) can be contacted.
  • "Act First, Ask Questions Later" Policy: The manufacturer operates an "act first, ask questions later" policy for fault resolution. They aim to resolve issues over the phone. If this is not possible, a loan unit will be shipped on the same or next working day.
  • Faulty Unit Collection and Diagnosis: The faulty unit will be collected within a few days for diagnosis. If the fault is covered by warranty, the unit will be repaired or replaced at no cost. If the fault is not covered (e.g., accidental damage), options will be discussed with the user.
  • Warranty Disclaimer: The warranty is null and void under specific conditions, including servicing by unauthorized personnel, broken factory seals without proper authorization, damage from falls or external shocks, natural disasters (fire, earthquake, flood, lightning), environmental pollution, abnormal voltage, storage outside specified limits, depletion of consumables, sand/soil ingress, arbitrary changes to purchase information, lack of proof of purchase, usage of non-recommended accessories, or inappropriate operation.
  • Regular Checks: The status LCD, visible through the carrying bag, should be checked regularly to monitor the unit's status, pad connection, expiration dates, and battery life. This proactive approach helps identify potential issues before an emergency.
  • Accessory Re-ordering: Information for re-ordering accessories such as disposable batteries (63032), dual adult/child pads (63124), AED starter kits (63040), indoor alarmed cabinets (63036), and wall mounting brackets (63138) is provided, along with a contact number for suppliers. This ensures that consumables and essential components can be easily replaced.
  • Ambulance Service Link-up: Users are encouraged to link up with their Local NHS Ambulance Service to register the device's location. This strengthens the "Chain of Survival" by ensuring that ambulance services are aware of AED locations, improving communication links and response times in an emergency. The registration process requires providing the organization name, address, contact name, contact number, contact email, location of the AED, and the make, model, and serial number of the AED. This information helps ambulance services log the position of AEDs in their control systems.
