Do you have a question about the JBL SYNTHESIS S3-SPP and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The JBL Synthesis S3-SPP (Synthesis Three Signal Processing Package) is a sophisticated audio component designed to enhance the listening experience in home theater systems, particularly those utilizing JBL's Synthesis Three Home Theater system, but also compatible with other Home THX® systems or home theater speaker packages. Its primary function is to provide precise frequency control and contouring for various audio channels, ensuring optimal sound quality and system performance.

Function Description:

The S3-SPP acts as an intermediary in the audio signal path, positioned between the surround processor and the power amplifiers. It offers extensive equalization capabilities for the Left, Center, Right, and Subwoofer channels. For the Left, Center, and Right channels, it features 3-channel graphic equalizers with 1/3 octave spacing, allowing for detailed frequency adjustments from 80 Hz to 800 Hz. The Mono Subwoofer Graphic Equalizer provides even finer control over low frequencies, with 1/6 octave spacing from 25 Hz to 80 Hz. These equalization features are crucial for tailoring the sound to the specific acoustics of a room and the characteristics of the speakers.

Beyond basic equalization, the S3-SPP incorporates specialized features to address common challenges in home theater installations. One such feature is the electronically switchable screen boost control for the Left, Center, and Right channels. This is particularly useful when speakers are mounted behind perforated screens, which can cause a rolloff in sound level at higher frequencies (typically starting from 2kHz-6kHz). When activated, the screen boost circuits compensate for this rolloff by increasing the output signal by 6dB per octave, starting at a user-selected frequency setpoint. This ensures a flatter frequency response in the room, preserving the intended sound quality. The screen boost can be controlled automatically by a Synthesis Home Media or Cinema Only system, or manually set to "on" or "off." For THX-approved screens, it is recommended to set the screen boost switch to the "off" position. If using the S3-SPP with another manufacturer's home theater system, the screen boost circuits will always be enabled when the switch is in the "on" position, regardless of the signal source.

Another key feature is the High Frequency Contour control, which is operational only in cinema mode. These controls provide up to 10dB of high-frequency gain using an electronically controlled filter centered around 19.5kHz. This equalization is specifically designed for horn systems, such as those found in Synthesis Three systems, which often exhibit an inherent high-frequency rolloff. By boosting these frequencies, the filter helps achieve a flatter rolloff and preserves high-frequency information, contributing to a more accurate and detailed sound reproduction.

For audiophile listening or when equalization is not desired, the S3-SPP includes a bypass control. Pressing this button removes all equalization circuits from the audio path, allowing the input signals to pass directly to the outputs unmodified. An indicator light glows when the bypass mode is active.

The device also addresses potential electrical issues with a ground lift switch. This switch allows for the separation of chassis ground and signal ground, which can be effective in eliminating annoying 50/60 cycle hum and noise caused by ground loops. For normal operation, the switch should remain in the "lift" position.

Usage Features:

The S3-SPP is designed for straightforward integration into an existing audio system. Connections are made between the surround processor/receiver outputs and the S3-SPP inputs, and then from the S3-SPP outputs to the power amplifier inputs. The manual provides a clear diagram for a typical system layout, illustrating the connections with S650 and S400 power amplifiers and an SDP-1 surround processor.

The equalization sliders on the front panel allow for intuitive adjustment of frequency response. However, to prevent accidental changes to these critical settings, a removable security panel is provided. This panel can be installed after calibration to secure the controls.

The screen boost functionality requires careful setup to be effective. Users need to determine the frequency at which screen-induced signal rolloff begins, often by consulting the screen manufacturer or a JBL Synthesis dealer. For installations where front left and right speakers are also mounted behind a perforated screen, internal jumpers need to be repositioned to activate the screen boost circuits for those channels, as the unit comes configured for the center channel only. This involves removing the top cover of the unit and adjusting the jumpers located near the front, directly behind the screen boost controls.

The ground lift switch offers a practical solution for resolving hum and buzz problems. It is important to turn down amplifier levels before changing positions on this switch to avoid potential issues.

Maintenance Features:

The S3-SPP is designed for reliability and does not contain user-serviceable parts inside. Any servicing should be referred to qualified service personnel. The manual emphasizes several important safeguards for audio products, including proper placement for ventilation, protection from water and moisture, and correct power source connections. Regular cleaning of the product is recommended, following the manufacturer's guidelines. The removable security panel serves as a maintenance feature by protecting the calibrated settings from unintended alterations, ensuring consistent performance.
