Overview

This document describes the "Digital Bathroom Scale" (Model 9219 JL, Stock No. 80960201), providing instructions for its use and maintenance.

The primary function of this device is to measure and display body weight. It is designed for domestic use and features a convenient "step-on" operation, meaning that once the scale is initialized, users can simply step onto the platform to get a reading without needing to tap or press buttons first.

Usage Features:

Preparation:

  1. Battery Installation: To prepare the scale for use, first open the battery compartment located on the underside. If an isolating tab is present, remove it from beneath the battery. If no tab is present or if replacing batteries, insert one CR2032 battery, ensuring the correct polarity (+ and -) as indicated inside the compartment. Close the battery compartment securely.
  2. Weight Mode Selection: On the underside of the scale, there is a switch to select the desired weight mode: kilograms (kg), stones (st), or pounds (lb). Choose the appropriate unit for your preference.
  3. Carpet Feet (Optional): If the scale will be used on carpeted surfaces, attach the enclosed carpet feet to ensure stability and accurate readings.
  4. Placement: Position the scale on a firm, flat surface. This is crucial for accurate and repeatable measurements. Avoid placing it on uneven surfaces or against a wall.

Initialization:

The scale requires an initial setup process to calibrate it, especially after its first use or if it has been moved.

  1. Step On and Off: Gently press the center of the scale platform with your foot, then immediately remove your foot.
  2. Display Confirmation: The display will show '0.0'.
  3. Automatic Shut-off: The scale will then switch off, indicating it is ready for use. This initialization process must be repeated if the scale is moved to a different location. For all subsequent uses, after initialization, you can simply step straight onto the scale.

Operation:

  1. Step On: Step onto the scale platform and stand very still. The scale will automatically compute your weight.
  2. Weight Display: Your weight will be displayed on the screen.
  3. Step Off: Step off the scale.
  4. Automatic Shut-off: The weight reading will remain displayed for a few seconds before the scale automatically switches off to conserve battery life.

Warning Indicators:

The scale provides specific indicators to alert users to certain conditions:

  • O-Ld: This indicates that the weight on the scale exceeds its maximum capacity.
  • Lo: This means the battery needs to be replaced.
  • Err: This signifies an unstable weight reading, prompting the user to stand still.

Advice for Use:

  • Consistency: Always weigh yourself on the same scale, placed on the same floor surface, to ensure consistent readings. Avoid comparing readings from different scales due to potential manufacturing tolerances.
  • Optimal Conditions: For the greatest accuracy and repeatability, use the scale on a hard, even floor. Weigh yourself at the same time each day, preferably before meals and without footwear. The first thing in the morning is generally considered a good time for weighing.
  • Rounding: The scale rounds up or down to the nearest increment. If you weigh yourself twice and get two different readings, your actual weight likely lies between those two readings.
  • Safety: The platform can become slippery when wet, so exercise caution. Do not drop the scale or jump on it, as it is a precision instrument.

Troubleshooting Guide:

If you encounter any difficulties with your scale, consider the following:

  • Battery Check: Ensure the battery is correctly fitted and that you have selected the correct weight unit (stones/pounds, kilograms, or pounds).
  • Placement: Verify that the scale is on a flat, level floor and not touching any walls or other objects.
  • Re-initialization: If the scale has been moved, repeat the initialization procedure.
  • Display Issues: If there is no display, or if 'Lo' is displayed, try replacing the battery with a new one. If 'O-Ld' is displayed, it means the scale has been overloaded.

Maintenance Features:

Cleaning:

  • Clean the scale with a damp cloth.
  • Do not use chemical cleaning agents, as these can damage the device.
  • Prevent the scale from becoming saturated with water, as this can damage the internal electronics.

Battery Replacement:

The scale uses one CR2032 battery.

  • Battery Type: Only use recommended batteries or those of the same or equivalent type.
  • Mixing Batteries: Do not mix old and new batteries, or batteries of different types.
  • Polarity: Ensure batteries are inserted with the correct polarity.
  • Short-Circuiting: The supply terminals should not be short-circuited.
  • Removal: Remove exhausted batteries from the item. If the equipment will not be used for extended periods, remove the batteries to prevent leakage.
  • Rechargeable Batteries: If using rechargeable batteries, they must be removed from the item before being recharged, and charging should only be done under adult supervision. Do not attempt to recharge non-rechargeable batteries.
  • Disposal: Batteries contain substances that can be harmful to the environment and human health. Keep them out of reach of children. If swallowed, seek immediate medical help. The symbol indicates that batteries should not be disposed of with normal household waste; instead, they should be taken to appropriate local recycling facilities. Never throw batteries into a fire or attempt to open their outer casing.

Environmental Responsibility (WEEE Explanation):

The symbol on the product indicates that it should not be treated as normal household waste but should be recycled. John Lewis, as a member of the Distributor Take Back scheme, has funded the development and upgrade of recycling facilities across the UK. Users are advised to take the product to their nearest collection facility or contact their local council for more details.

Electromagnetic Compatibility:

This product is designed for domestic use. It is a sensitive electronic instrument and may be temporarily affected by radio transmitting devices (e.g., mobile phones, walkie-talkies, CB radios, radio model controllers, microwave ovens) used in close proximity. Extreme levels of electrostatic interference may also cause temporary malfunction. If this occurs, it may be necessary to remove and re-install the battery to re-establish normal working. If the problem persists, contact your local agent.

Guarantee:

This digital scale is guaranteed against defects in material and workmanship for 15 years from the date of purchase. If it proves defective within this period, return it to a John Lewis branch with proof of purchase.

Users are advised to retain this information leaflet for future reference.
