Overview

This manual describes the repair and maintenance procedures for JOST sensor-enabled fifth wheel couplings, specifically the JSK 37, JSK 40, and JSK 42 Daimler versions. These devices are mechanical connecting components designed to establish a secure link between a tractor unit and a semi-trailer. They are critical vehicle-connecting parts that must adhere to stringent safety requirements and undergo design approval tests.

Function Description:

JOST fifth wheel couplings are equipped with sensors to monitor various aspects of their operation, including locking status, kingpin presence, and semi-trailer detection. These sensors provide feedback to the vehicle's system, ensuring safe and correct coupling. The repair instructions focus on replacing the sensor set, which includes the semi-trailer detection sensor, kingpin sensor, and locking sensor. The system is designed to comply with Directives 94/20/EC and Regulation ECE R55-01 in class 50, and it must be used with kingpins of class H50 and class J mounting plates or comparable licensed equipment. The couplings are also suitable for use in power steering systems.

Important Technical Specifications:

The load capacity of the fifth wheel couplings and mounting plates is determined by the fifth wheel load (U) and the D-value. The D-value, representing the drawing bar value in kilonewtons (kN), is calculated using the formula: D = g x (0.6 x T x R) / (T + R - U) where:

  • D = Drawing bar value [kN]
  • g = 9.81 m/s²
  • R = Permissible total weight of the semi-trailer [t]
  • T = Permissible total weight of the towing vehicle, including U [t]
  • U = Permissible fifth wheel load [t]

A sample calculation provided in the manual shows: T = 17 t R = 33 t U = 10.5 t D = 9.81 x (0.6 x 17 x 33) / (17 + 33 - 10.5) kN = 83.6 kN

The wear dimensions for the fifth wheel coupling wear part are specified:

  • JSK 37C without plastic liner: 32.0 - 33.5 mm
  • JSK 37 with plastic liners and JSK 40/JSK 42 with and without plastic liners: 19.0 - 20.5 mm

Tightening torques are critical for proper assembly and function:

  • Kingpin sensor grub screw: 3 Nm
  • Semi-trailer sensor securing nuts: 30 Nm
  • Locking sensor screw (JSK 42): 6.5 Nm
  • Hexagon nut for locking sensor (JSK 40/JSK 42): 65 Nm
  • Securing nut for locking sensor (JSK 37): Hand tightness, then 49 Nm for hexagonal screw (24) and M5 x 10 screw (29) to specified torque.

Usage Features:

The sensor-enabled fifth wheel couplings provide real-time feedback on their status. Display symbols and additional text messages guide the operator in identifying issues such as:

  • "To open the fifth wheel coupling": Indicates the coupling is not locked or no lock is detected.
  • "To check the fifth wheel coupling": Appears if the coupling is locked but no kingpin is detected.
  • "Fifth wheel coupling sensing faulty": Suggests issues with the kingpin or semi-trailer detection sensors, or the locking sensor.

These messages prompt the operator to perform checks, clean sensors, or adjust components as necessary. The system ensures that the fifth wheel coupling functions correctly before operation, enhancing safety.

Maintenance Features:

The manual provides detailed instructions for repair work, emphasizing the use of JOST spare parts to maintain warranty and type approval. Key maintenance aspects include:

  • Safety First: All conversion work must be carried out by trained personnel in suitable workshops, adhering to relevant safety regulations and using appropriate tools. Before any electrical work, the battery must be disconnected.
  • Component Replacement: Worn, damaged, or cracked parts must always be replaced. Repair welds are not permitted. New screws and nuts provided with the repair kit must be used.
  • Cleaning: All parts must be thoroughly cleaned before assembly, ensuring electrical plug connectors or compressed air connectors remain free of soil. Grease deposits on sensors and magnets should be removed and areas re-greased with high-pressure grease (e.g., JOST high-performance lubricant Art. No. SKE 005 670 000).
  • Adjustment: Before commencing work, the fifth wheel coupling must be adjusted according to operating instructions with a new wearing ring and new kingpin. The kingpin sensor clamping screw must always be tightened to the specified torque.
  • Functional Checks: After conversion, the function must be verified in accordance with installation and operating instructions. This includes checking wear dimensions, locking function, and sensor functionality using a diagnostic tester or a resistance measuring device.
  • Sensor-Specific Checks:
    • Wear Sensor: Resistance measurements on the plug contacts are performed while moving the handle/traps to check for proper function. Values should be less than 1 Ω when closed and infinite when open.
    • Kingpin Sensor: The LED on the back of the sensor should not light up when the coupling is open (no kingpin) but should light up when closed with test kingpins. The distance between the sensor and kingpin must be checked and adjusted (setting dimension A = X + 75.5 mm).
    • Semi-trailer Detection Sensor: The LED on the back of the sensor (observed with a mirror) should not light up when the coupling is open (no semi-trailer coupled) but should light up when powered with a socket.
  • Disassembly and Assembly: The manual provides step-by-step instructions for removing and fitting various components, including cable ties, semi-trailer sensor, connecting socket, kingpin sensor, and locking sensor (for JSK 40/JSK 42 and JSK 37). Instructions for creating a repair drill hole for the JSK 37 locking sensor are also included.
  • Disposal: Mounted parts are valuable raw materials that can be recycled. They should be separated into plastic/rubber and metallic materials, and cleaned of any residual oil or grease before disposal. Plastic and rubber are labeled according to VDA recommendation 260.
