PTX5000 DC Power Requirements
To allow for future growth so that you can operate the packet transport switch in any
hardware configuration without upgrading the power infrastructure, we recommend that
you provision 92.5 A @ –48 VDC per input on each PDU.
Table 48 on page 262 lists the power requirements for various hardware components
when the packet transport switch is operating under typical voltage conditions. For power
requirements for each PIC, see the PTX5000 Packet Transport Switch PIC Guide.
You can use the information in Table 48 on page 262 and the PTX5000 Packet Transport
Switch PIC Guide to calculate power consumption for various hardware configurations,
input current from a different source voltage, and thermal output, as shown in the
following examples for a DC-powered packet transport switch.
Table 48: Typical DC Power Requirements for Components
Maximum Current Requirement
(Amps @ –48 VDC)Component
28.2 ABase system, not including (includes fan trays at normal
speed, one host subsystem, one CCG, and the craft interface
) and two PDU and two PSM
0.3 ACentralized clock generator (CCG)
11.6 A (typical speed)
63.8 A (higher speed)
Cooling system
0.3 ACraft interface
3.7 AHost subsystem (control board and Routing Engine)
11.6 AFPC
1.2 ASwitch interface board
0.7 APIC—Generalized typical value
1.6 APIC—Generalized maximum value
Example of calculating power consumption for a minimum configuration:
Base System + 1 FPC + 1 PIC=
28.2 A + 11.6 A + 0.7 A = 40.5 A @ –48 VDC = 1944 W
Example of calculating power consumption for a maximum configuration:
