Anti-lock brake system (ABS)

ABS(orESC)willnotprevent
accidentsduetoimproperor
dangerousdrivingmaneuvers.Even
thoughvehiclecontrolisimproved
duringemergencybraking,always
maintainasafedistancebetween
youandobjectsahead.Vehicle
speedsshouldalwaysbereduced
duringextremeroadconditions.
Thebrakingdistanceforcars
equippedwithananti-lockbraking
system(orElectronicStability
Controlsystem)maybelongerthan
forthosewithoutitinthefollowing
roadconditions.
Duringtheseconditionsthevehicle
shouldbedrivenatreducedspeeds:
• Rough,gravelorsnow-covered
roads.
• Withtirechainsinstalled.
• Onroadswheretheroadsurface
ispittedorhasdifferentsurface
height.
ThesafetyfeaturesofanABS(or
ESC)equippedvehicleshouldnot
betestedbyhighspeeddrivingor
cornering.Thiscouldendangerthe
safetyofyourselforothers.
TheABScontinuouslysensesthe
speedofthewheels.Ifthewheels
aregoingtolock,theABSsystem
repeatedlymodulatesthehydraulic
brakepressuretothewheels.
Whenyouapplyyourbrakesunder
conditionswhichmaylockthe
wheels,youmayheara“tik-tik”
soundfromthebrakes,orfeela
correspondingsensationinthebrake
pedal.Thisisnormalanditmeans
yourABSisactive.
Inordertoobtainthemaximum
benefitfromyourABSinan
emergencysituation,donotattempt
tomodulateyourbrakepressure
anddonottrytopumpyourbrakes.
Pressyourbrakepedalashardas
possibleorashardasthesituation
warrantsandallowtheABSto
controltheforcebeingdeliveredto
thebrakes.
