vehicleisbyitself.
Beforeyoustart,checkthetrailer
hitchandplatform,safetychains,
electricalconnector(s),lights,tires
andmirroradjustment.Ifthetrailer
haselectricbrakes,startyour
vehicleandtrailermovingandthen
applythetrailerbrakecontroller
byhandtobesurethebrakesare
working.Thisletsyoucheckyour
electricalconnectionatthesame
time.
Duringyourtrip,checkoccasionally
tobesurethattheloadissecure,
andthatthelightsandtrailerbrakes
arestillworking.
Following distance
Stayatleasttwiceasfarbehindthe
vehicleaheadasyouwouldwhen
drivingyourvehiclewithoutatrailer.
Thiscanhelpyouavoidsituations
thatrequireheavybrakingand
suddenturns.
Passing
You’llneedmorepassingdistance
upaheadwhenyou’retowinga
trailer.And,becauseoftheincreased
vehiclelength,you’llneedtogo
muchfartherbeyondthepassed
vehiclebeforeyoucanreturnto
yourlane.
Backing up
Holdthebottomofthesteering
wheelwithonehand.Then,tomove
thetrailertotheleft,justmoveyour
handtotheleft.Tomovethetrailer
totheright,moveyourhandtothe
right.Alwaysbackupslowlyand,if
possible,havesomeoneguideyou.
Making turns
Whenyou’returningwithatrailer,
makewiderturnsthannormal.
Dothissoyourtrailerwon’tstrike
softshoulders,curbs,roadsigns,
trees,orotherobjects.Avoidjerky
orsuddenmaneuvers.Signalwellin
advance.
Turn signals when towing a trailer
Whenyoutowatrailer,yourvehicle
hastohaveadifferentturnsignal
flasherandextrawiring.Thegreen
arrowsonyourinstrumentpanelwill
flashwheneveryousignalaturnor
lanechange.Properlyconnected,the
trailerlightswillalsoflashtoalert
otherdriversyou’reabouttoturn,
changelanes,orstop.
Whentowingatrailer,thegreen
arrowsonyourinstrumentpanel
willflashforturnsevenifthebulbs
