Parking on a hill
Parkingyourvehicleonahillwitha
trailerattachedcouldcauseserious
injuryordeath,shouldthetrailer
breakloose.
However,ifyoueverhavetopark
yourtraileronahill,here’showto
doit:
1.Pullthevehicleintotheparking
space.Turnthesteeringwheelin
thedirectionofthecurb(rightif
headeddownhill,leftifheadedup
hill).
2.Ifthevehiclehasamanual
transmission,placethecarin
neutral.
3.Settheparkingbrakeandshutoff
thevehicle.
4.Placechocksunderthetrailer
wheelsonthedownhillsideofthe
wheels.
5.Startthevehicle,holdthebrakes,
shifttoneutral,releasethe
parkingbrakeandslowlyrelease
thebrakesuntilthetrailerchocks
absorbtheload.
6.Reapplythebrakes,reapply
theparkingbrakeandshiftthe
vehicletoR(Reverse)formanual
transmission.
7.Shutoffthevehicleandrelease
thevehiclebrakesbutleavethe
parkingbrakeset.
WARNING
Parking brake
Itcanbedangeroustogetoutof
yourvehicleiftheparkingbrakeis
notfirmlyset.
Ifyouhavelefttheenginerunning,
thevehiclecanmovesuddenly.
Youorotherscouldbeseriouslyor
fatallyinjured.
When you are ready to leave after
parking on a hill
1.Withthemanualtransmissionin
Neutral,applyyourbrakesand
holdthebrakepedaldownwhile
you:
•Startyourengine;
•Shiftintogear;and
•Releasetheparkingbrake.
2.Slowlyremoveyourfootfromthe
brakepedal.
3.Driveslowlyuntilthetraileris
clearofthechocks.
4.Stopandhavesomeonepickup
andstorethechocks.
Maintenance when trailer towing
Yourvehiclewillneedservicemore
oftenwhenyouregularlypulla
trailer.Importantitemstopay
particularattentiontoincludeengine
oil,axlelubricantandcoolingsystem
fluid.Brakeconditionisanother
importantitemtofrequentlycheck.
